Couple a short stroke w cutting the plate in half and you have a decent chance at putting the ball in play hard w 2 strikes. If you’re beat a bit you can still shoot the ball on a line or ground hard UTM or the other way. The most comfortable and confident can still adjust back up
‘In the zone’ if needed.

Don’t disagree with any of this. Going to be honest with you, I was a very non-cerebral hitter..see ball, hit ball was good enough for me for the level I played up to..🤷🏽‍♂️

and that works too. Usually by subconsciously knowing what you can handle and not. As well as count etc etc.

There is a mechanical and mental advantage to looking down as well as out.

ok so what you’re saying is she expanded her zone, and if the pitcher woulda thrown her another change up low, she woulda lost the AB right? Iyo correct? Bc she was trying to cover anything near the zone? Expanding it right? What am I missing?
What you’re missing is that I know Maddie’s weaknesses, and a low/out change up is one of them. Going to that pitch again in that AB would have been a good choice to try to beat her.

there’s just so many ways to go w this. Nvm.
Not sure what you mean. I was just sharing my opinion about what would have probably been effective against her in that situation, based on what I know about my kid’s strengths/weaknesses. Obviously, it didn’t go that way, and she won the battle. All we can do is guess about what might have been.

you have already acknowledged the hole in Maddies’ zone. But she still chased her weakness w less than 2 strikes. Bc she expanded her zone right? Why would you swing at your ‘worst’ pitch without being forced to??? Let that soak in for a second.

I think approach for a top D1 hitter is going to differ from a 14u player. Facing the best pitchers throwing 65 plus some/ most hitters are going to have to guess some.
DD rarely Ks.
She struck out looking recently. It wasn't a strike but she should have swung. The ump had been giving the pitcher literally 2 balls off the plate all day. Its her job to know that and deal with it as part of her approach. Its not OK to K looking and blame the ump especially if he has been consistent.

The ump needs to get a clue or quit !! Hitting is hard enough the way it is ! Teaching kids to cover balls outside the zone that far isn't right... I had that exact convo with an experienced ump after a game while she was eating a hotdog by herself ( Didn't want to show her up during the game but she needed a reality check).

I tend to ask between innings in a coy kinda way. After I ask if they want a water of course. LOL
