We're squarely in the zone of overthinking things.

Some "mis-hit" balls fall or squeek through for base hits, and some liners to the OF get caught. It balances out over time. If you keep missing solid contact, the outs are going to catch up to you. Similarly, if everything flies off the bat, you're going to hit it where someone isn't more often than not.

Had a young player get really frustrated a few years ago because two consecutive hard hits got caught. She said "what do I need to do differently"? My answer..."absolutely nothing"...the next swing sent a ball over the fence.

No, not all hits are created equally. A mis-hit vs a hard-hit vs a soft-hit needs to be looked at and factored in as a player/coach to aid in developing the player, evaluating the pitcher, etc..

If we start recording them separately we have a whole new category. How many "One Hit Wonders" will we have? Cue the music...Soft Cell - "Tainted Love" or Golden Earring with "Radar Love" (oh wait, they had "Twilight Zone" also), etc...

I personally think that scoring rules are archaic. With electronic scoring that we have today there is the potential to really make stats that are useful. The concept of team errors, half errors and "lucky" hits are a possibility. It takes a really good scored in concert with the coach to make it work but I do think that information is the future.
kinda of already have this in addition to the standard statistics. HHGB, spray charts, recording line drives vs pop flies, 2 out rbi, etc. are all available now in GC. now the quality of this is a reflection of whomever is keeping score. just got to dig deeper.

and over time, it will all average out.

You guys are using QABs right?

A Quality At-Bats is any plate appearance that results in a:

  • Hard it ball
  • Walk
  • 8 Pitch At-Bat
  • Sac Bunt/Fly
  • Move Runners Over w/ Less than 2 Outs
  • Base Hit

Talking about batted pitches.
And the batter gets on base.
