When a routine grounder hits a rock in the infield, resulting in a ball being mishandled and dropped, it's an error. Is it "fair" that the rock interfered with the play?
some might argue that the routine grounder hitting a rock and taking an odd hop might make it no longer routine (same way a pop fly to SS on very windy day might not be considered IFR).

No real dog in this fight (I’m just concerned with out/safe) ... but I keep going back to this thought (along the lines of a broken bat, etc.) ... if the runner trips running to first and is thrown out, it is just an out.

So if the fielder’s glove breaks, it is just a hit. Neither fielder did anything wrong. I’m leaning back towards “hit”.

Error. Its not changing the score of the game and I'm sure nobody of importance looks at a teams Game Changer. So the 1st baseman has an extra error at the end of the year. No biggie.
