Pedroia :

see comparison clip at 4 min mark comparing rearward arc of pedroia to no rearward arc.
this "hand mechanic" (forearms) is important in preventing drag. hand/forearm action is essential in providing resistance that enhances "connection" by produicing a "stretch and fire" (separation/"cusp") that provides "early batspeed" - a deeper bat, more read time, quick acceleration, adjustability and "efficient speed gains" (enquist/candrea/slaught "addition" concept).

Mankin's analysis of Pedroia is flawed.

As I have pointed out before, better video shows that Pedroia doesn't actually do what Mankin says he does.

Here's Pedroia missing a HR to LF by 4 or 5 vertical feet.

Thanks for posting some swings for review.

Allot of people on here just talk a good game but never show anyone they work with.

Will post one of Casey in the near future for your comments

I'll probably post a clip of my 3rd grade daughter in a bit, but I'm not sure.

For a variety of reasons, prior to 5th grade I don't like to formally work that much with kids.

I just let them be.

Conclusive is the fact that every kid posted that suffers from bat drag has a posture issue. Whether it is front posture (bend in the ankles, knees, and hips creating angles) or side posture (head over belly button - which equates balance).

I just got my new camera and will start posting video soon of some of the players I work with. I can tell you the kids that suffer from bat drag hit the ball better from a lower setup (meaning better angles). This cannot be disputed.

In Olearys kids case - by footplant his head is over his rear hip and is nearly vertical from the front view. Fix the posture.

The other thing posture will help with creating space for the hands to stay inside initially. Upright posture will lead to a hand around the front elbow path (casting/sweeping/coming around the ball).

Try the fence drill from an upright positon and then from a Pujols type stance. Which is easier and looks like a more realistic swing.

This clip gets a lot of bad press - IMO, he is too close to the netting. Now look at Glaus and notice how far away from the plate he is compared to Booth.

Anyway, creating angles in the posture creates room for the angled swing to miss the netting from a normal distance.

Set up the netting just on the other side of the plate that has a tee and get into two different stance - vertical and postured (each time use the bat against the belly button and the net for spacing). From the vertical stance mimic the bat drag swing by dropping the barrel and letting the elbow beat the hands. I bet you still hit the net behind the ball.

Now get into the postured stance and think about the hands beating the back elbow. Bet you dont hit the net.

The fence drill is a good drill to get rid of bat drag if used in conjunction with a good postured stance.

Check out the posture on these players - I don't see too many swings posted of kids in this hitting posture.

Posture is one of the things that we have spent some time working on, and it's not terrible (at least in this clip).

However, I have seen some variability (which is common).

This view shows the leaking back elbow, and how it causes the barrel to dump, quite well.
