    Monday brag 6-6

DD found her grove, beat only unbeaten team in league this week. 5 innings, 11k one HBP and a unearned run (outfield fell asleep with all the K's). Great week.

    Juggs Lite Flite machine.

Blocking and bunting. I have proven over time it is a sure fire tool to drop a batting average by 150 points.

    indoor practice areas

Basement. Full 48 feet. Setup for pitching and a sliding batting cage for hitting, which extends the full lenght on cables. Used carpet remnants for the backstop. Not long enough for a catcher though, about 3 feet short. Lose 2 feet at both ends to protect the walls ( and DD hand on back...

    YES! High School Softball discussion!

Last fall was DD first year of school ball. And a new school as well. She made the dress list (non starter) for V before the season started. Then starting JV pitcher. Ended the season in the 5 spot in the batting order on V, and shared some time in the circle. Ended season at .447. Team is...

How is Fall High School Softball Going for Everyone....?

DD's a freshman this year. Team made it to third in districts. Lost 9 games to 5 of the 8 championship teams. Team ended 12-14 for season. 6 losses by 8 runs. 4 games rained out. DD made varsity. Worked her way in to the batting lineup by the 7th game. Finished in the four spot. pitched...

Wrist Band Call System for Pitching

Used against us today and were very effective. Called pitch, location and defensive alignment. Defense shifted left, right, deep, in, bunt. But even more impressive was on offense. Every girl new the plan and they baited our team into a lot of bad throws/decisions. Very effective on...

Educate me on batting cage nets

I bought the lightweight 55 foot net for about $200. Built 3 u shaped pole brackets and hung the net from it. About $300total in it. Pros. Lightweight #21 type net. Easy to put up and take down. Move it into the pole barn in the winter. Works well for a home unit. Cons. Blows in the...

    Big thanks to this board!!

2 or 3 things.... Turned off the pitching machine. Made a plan and stuck with it. Simplified, 4 tee drills and front toss. 5-10 minutes everyday if possible. 30 minutes 3 times a week. Read, read and read to find what she was doing wrong and worked on one thing at a time. Built her swing...

Science people vs what the eye sees, simpletons

I love it. Science versus in-practice. I am a science geek so I love explaining what is happening in those terms. To me it all makes sense. However I think the biggest thing that is always missed is... The science of sight. For some reason many on here view sight as an absolute. When...

    Big thanks to this board!!

DD was a bench warmer last year in the batting order. In some games the coaches would use the Flex rule to keep here pitching but out of the batting lineup. Ended season at a .112. After the season she asked me to help her. Following the bits and pieces on this forum we made a plan and...

Late Breaking Pitches (Respect for Junk Ballers)

Spin has the greatest effect on the equation. However given the same spin rate the velocity would be the next greatest force in the equation. I would estimate that one more rev per second would have a greater effect than 5 mph on distanced moved in 43 feet.

    Question for Hal

I am not citing this as evidence. I did however find it very interesting of the fact "the reason" that the girls quit something that they were successful at. I do feel that there is strong research to suggest that older girls will often shun competition with there peers. Yes you are right I...

    Question for Hal

I think the older girls want to avoid competition within a peer group. Failure or lack of success destroys friendships. The social climate that we have in HS drives most girls to avoid any competitive activity that could make them feel inadequate. Had a local catcher/pitcher, 3 year HS...

    Blame game

A coach calls themselfes out. If I had not sent you to steal second, if I had not called for that change up. If I would have not called that bunt, of forced you to take third when it was not there, or shifted the outfield left. I am sure if you think about it everyone made some mistakes...

Results from this weekend and questions

Walks. At 12u they turn into runs. DD would have from 3-13 K per game. But the walks were always within 1 run of the score. The goal I talk about to her is no walks. Force the batter to swing at pitches they do not like. Make them put the ball in play and trust your teammates to take care...

The "acid test" of a breaking pitch

If the batter is fooled then who really cares what it is called. Is that not what pitching is all about? Referring to a pitch as a curve or a fastball that "moved an inch" sideways is semantics when the batter walks back to the dugout.

The "acid test" of a breaking pitch

I think the acid test is the effectiveness of the pitch on batters commensurate of age/skill. DD drop ball moves down a good 1-2 inches over the plate (Gravity helps). At 12Y it was very effective. Screw ball is fastest pitch. Moves a good 1-2 inches top. As a LHP it was a strike out pitch...

Why my DD will always wear a mask when pitching.....

I am not saying defensive drills should not be part of any pitchers practice, however they are not 100%. I have used them with my DD and the biggest deference is the number of stops she makes for outs. But for anyone to say drills are "the" solution are they same type of people who say you...
