I understand what you are saying about turning the barrel rearward. Get on plane deep in the zone, and the other high level benefits from this action, etc.

What causes this action in your opinions?

Do you promote the idea that the hands unhinging immediately cause this action?
Or does the back elbow slotting cause this action, assuming they stay connected?

This has probably been discussed recently, but I have not been on this site in awhile.

Thanks ahead of time.

Interesting thread.

This is actually the cue we were using the other night with DD to try and get some connection and remove bat drag, etc.. Slot the elbow and start hands forward, . The slotting of the elbow was designed to "feel" like the starting position in the epstein torque drill. She had some success on the tee and in some soft front toss, but it was short lived as the old habits came back quickly. This did give me hope however as the results were staggering. Wish I had video of those swings I assume looked good as the ball was flying. I know we need some cue or some consciousness of this part of the swing to repeat and repeat and repeat to burn out the hand drop muscle memory that has been developed over time.

That is an excellent article on feeling the hip coil and how to maintain it going forward, thanks for sharing and thanks to Tewks.

When I started this thread I was actually looking for an in depth explanation how to feel and teach the barrel going rearward and the actions and feelings to look for - like Tewks explained the forward by coiling. I know how I teach it, was just looking for more drills/cues/and an in depth explanation. Still waiting.

Always trying to learn just one more thing :)

Steven maybe this would be useful. Also notice the sequence. Josh Hamilton and Matt Kemp Rear Leg and Rear Hip Actions

Hey Stever. If you think of some more questions, could you please ask and re ask here. Kind of a start over. I unintentially led it away with my feelings against a large dose (and teaching of) of independent arm action to launch the swing.

Personal I would not recommend what you are doing. By taking the hands forward all you are doing is creating a push swing. Sure it creates the image of eliminating bat drag but in essence you are just creating another problem by not creating the necessary whip needed to hit elite pitching.

What Crankermo said, I see Busto turn the hands, that slots the elbow first. Then the hands move forward. When you turn the barrel rearward that will allow the hips to pull the hands/barrel through to the ball.

thanks for the feedback rd and crankermo
"By taking the hands forward all you are doing is creating a push swing. " Is this necessarily true? When I say bring the hands forward, it is as compared to bringing them down and around.

We are working on back foot push off, with proper stretch. if the slotting of the elbow involves a tight coil and strong power vee which begins the swing, what would be wrong with Slot the elbow and start hands forward ?

thanks

Thinking out loud along the lines of Epstein torque drill. Why not try this drill (Attack Opp)

With the object after getting into a 'SNF' position creating a corner, with rear hip coil against an internally rotating rear leg. At heel drop think turn the barrel rearward with the forearms/hands.

If your rear leg turns. If your scap pulls against that turn. If your hands stay near the same distance from your torso near your back shoulder. If your hands apply force to turn the barrel rearward. Your torso will tilt. Your rear elbow will move toward "slotting". All launching with the strong muscles of the leg and back. Creating a corner the barrel whips around. Rearward and around the corner.
