I have read all the posts so someone may have posed this question. I wonder how the transfer portal will affect the overlap?
Will recruits opt for non power 5 so they can play right away?
Will the bigger schools go to the portal over incoming freshman?
A lot of money is spent on travel ball to be noticed by certain teams. Will this be less important thinking one can go D2-D3 then transfer?

In DD’s D3 conference I am noticing more D1/D2 talent (per my opinion, so take with a grain of salt) taking spots. I like it because it increases the game level and competitiveness of the conference.

I’m sure it’s got to be frustrating for the D1 talent who truly want to stick to that division only.

Know of a player who dropped from D1 to a local junior College (wanted to live at home) thinking she would get the starting shortstop position... was beat out by a graduating high school senior who needed to improve her grades and was utilizing the junior college to do so then to transfer into a four year.
Imagine the shock of the D1 player...

Even back when I was in college (D3) we got D1 drop downs who transferred because they weren’t playing or they had their scholarship taken. Seems like initially we were all excited to be getting a good player, but then the reason they dropped down became evident…most weren’t D1 caliber kids to begin with.

Yep - some of those JC’s are no joke! The one that DD’s team has scrimmaged frequently has players move on to D1. They have a great track record of making it to the NJCAA WS.

There it is again...it happens!
Can remember some D1 players on our roster who maybe got one inning twice a season 🤷‍♀️
Can't imagine being on a team but never playing. Especially these teams with nearly 30 players on it what the heck??!

I find it insane that anyone would want to go somewhere to sit half their college career, which is the end of their softball career. Not sure how anyone can find that acceptable.

As a person who was on a D1 team who never played...yeah, not playing sucked, but everything else was great. And I was going to school for school, baseball was just a bonus. (And I still "played"...intersquad games, "JV" games against other schools ("scrub scrimmages), and all the parts of the actual games that aren't "playing").

Sometimes the choice is go to your dream school and sit, or go to some other school and play. It can be acceptable if the school part is the part that sets you up for a happy successful life.

I just wonder if these players don’t realize that they aren’t going to be starters when they are recruited? Are the college coaches selling them the dream but not discussing the finer details? Do the players not ask where the coach sees them fitting in on the team during the process?

Unfortunately I think at times it’s “D1”softball that is the initial driving factor and not the academics for those players who don’t come off the bench.
