I just wonder if these players don’t realize that they aren’t going to be starters when they are recruited? Are the college coaches selling them the dream but not discussing the finer details? Do the players not ask where the coach sees them fitting in on the team during the process?
Certainly cannot speak for all the college coaches but the ones that I have conversations with and the players they are selecting to make offers on, including hearing the conversations from those players, coaches seem to be pretty transparent about where the player would be on the roster.

However I do also hear stories about college coaches recruiting players that are not directly up front about what other players they may be pursuing at the same time. That would be before making direct offers.

Then there are conversations college coaches are having that are so vague it's extremely difficult to interpret if College truly have interest or not. But that is prior to direct interest in specifically wanting to recruit a player. From this i comment,
Cast of broad net of colleges you're seeking to be recruited by and the ones that really want you will stand out in their conversation.

"You will have a chance to compete"....

It is up to the player and their parents to decide what that really means and since every kid is ranked in the top 100 of some list.... 🤷‍♂️

I got a lot of questions about this thread.
" dropped down became evident…most weren’t D1 caliber kids to begin with."
along with

"Know of a player who dropped from D1 to a local junior College (wanted to live at home) thinking she would get the starting shortstop position... was beat out by a graduating high school senior who needed to improve her grades and was utilizing the junior college to do so then to transfer into a four year.
Imagine the shock of the D1 player..."

So how and why did these players get recruited D1 in the first place? Evaluation error? Did coach like the "mold" and thought he or she could fix the flaws but then realized they couldn't? Did they have real good grades and it was a very limited scholarship?

ALSO, do college softball teams have ".inters quad games, "JV" games against other schools ("scrub scrimmages),"?

That to *me says
Player is not being considered a starter and will be on the lower half of the roster. Trying to prove themselves against the other players that are trying to prove themselves. To then try to compete with the players that have already proved themselves.

Further, should any of the starters get injured or become academically ineligible the lower half of the roster that has proved themselves best might get some innings in.

I would hope that there would be some more transparency, but I’m sure this is probably the case more often times than not.

Wonder if the amount of the scholarship might be an indicator to how much playing time a player could/might expect? Smaller amounts may be given to the backup to the backup if the real starter gets hurt or jumps into the portal? Or a late inning defensive specialist? LOL

There is a percentage of players (which I could only guesstimate but it is more than a few) that select a college that is in a different demographic than what they grew up with. The player is put into a completely different environment, *including the weather, that they find out is the wrong decision after being there a semester or so. They either do not acclimate or recognize it's so completely different they don't like it.

Wrong pick probably made by emotions instead of thinking it through.

Referring to D2 and D3 there is also a percentage of players that because their funding is academic funding even though they are participating in a sport.
* and the sport is actually what opened the door for them to get into the college,

The students recognize that if their GPA fall below standard they will lose their academic money and make the decision to drop softball to keep their college goal. They drop softball so they can actually study.

About 14 years ago head coach at Fullerton Junior College contacted me needing some help on their coaching roster. That season we had scrub scrimmages, one was against UCLA.

Coaches need to carry bench players. It isn't their responsibility to make sure Sally finds her perfect school..that is Sally and Sally's Daddy/Mommy's responsibility. Wouldn't be as much of an issue if parent's stopped drinking the Kool-Aid.
