This is another discussion of the problem, probably a good read for 14U and under just to be aware - whether it is apophysitis or epiphysiolysis- the problem has the same cause and it is good to be informed.

Children's Memorial Hospital (Chicago, IL)

My DD's growth plates are closed (I think)- sadly, at 5'7"- she would be dwarf by current D1 standards

My DD has J-bands- I think they are very good for this, I was also thinking of yoga, both for core and flexibility (for my daughter that is-although I am sure there would be benefits all around)

Where exactly does it hurt?

Best answer she could give was the front part of her shoulder. She had a hard time getting me to understand if it was muscle or something deeper in the shoulder. That frustrated me because when I thought back to my younger days it seemed my arm was ALWAYS sore mainly because I always threw as hard as I could and wouldn't quit. So in my mind I'm thinking "is this just normal everyday soreness but her first time experiencing it?". I discarded that thought though when I factored in her competitive spirit vs the fact that she wanted to come out of the game.

Kinda thought she would say that.

10 years old, front shoulder pain. Dollar to a doughnut says you have a timing issue going on here.

At the exact instant of landing foot touchdown, the ball must be at around 1:00 to 1:30, just into the backswing. Of it is off by much from that, that is exactly where it will hurt. That would be my first guess with a 10 year old beginner.

Look for that.

Now it's real interesting that you bring that up. In the outing prior to the one in which she had pain (the week prior), there was a big hole where her stide foot landed. She's kind of small with small feet and it really messed up her control to the point where we went to another pitcher who was bigger and more able to step over it. I wonder if that could have started this whole mess.

tepping out into a deep hole causes a hard jarrung landing. It can cause shoulder irritation and certainly contribute to the soreness in the front. The soreness caused by the hard landing is not as present as the timing thing. I have seen an entire team of 10u's all complaining of that front pain. Team coach had tried to teach them with bad mechanics.

I'm still betting it.s a timing issue.

By chance did you watch either of the videos I posted of her pitching?

Watched the video as best I could. She is 'Chicken winging' the arm circle and not taking a stride at all. She is throwing 100% shoulder.

Get her to a competent instructor before she hurts herself.
