More plays at the plate.
This is Long Beach State vs Arizona

Throw comming from right field.
And was to my right side, can see my glove going that way
Facing throw.
Ball first.
Just about to catch it dropping knee.
To then turn and make the play.
Out.
And a pic of young Mike Candrea in short shorts.
Old School

You can't block the plate like that anymore and your setting yourself up for an ankle and or knee injury from the looks of it.

His DD was the 1B

Thanks for keeping me on my toes.

That make it worse since as an infielder it looks like a cut from outfield (hard to see on my phone) so she has to turn and throw quickly. Looks like a decent job of that.

The coach yelling at anyone is bad because they did everything right except execution which takes practice.

If you are coaching a 14U team where your RF cannot make that throw without a cut getting mad about anything else is probably pointless..

Why do you want to throw the ball right and the plate when you have to tag the runner before the get to the plate? Shouldn't the ball be about a foot up the third base foul line? I have umped too many bangers at the plate and had coaches scream when the catcher drops the tag on the runner who's already on the plate. And teach all players to let the ball travel...

The throw was in front of the plate.
It was on target!
imo that throw was good.

Trajectory came from right side of field....
So it would cross in front of the plate getting to that spot on 3rd base line.

*Can throw it to 3rd base side of home plate is fine.
Does this make sense to you~This throw came from right side of the field
Which means its trajectory to get to the 3rd base side of home plate would cross in front of home plate.
Which is where that throw was caught.
Directly In FRONT of home plate.
(not on the plate)

Look at video again.
Do you notice the catchers body is standing between catching the ball and making the tag?
That position
Cannot just catch and tag.
There has to be an extra movement (to get the ball around her OWN body to make a tag)
That distance and time can matter!

Some plays are so close accuracy on a throw being exactly at the 3rd base corner of the plate really matters.
Because there can be so little time to catch & tag.
( just like it does on runners stealing or pickoffs. Directly at edge of base matters.)

do not want to lead the throw *several feet up the line as a norm. 1-2 feet ok.
Takes away time by shortening distance.

To your point of let the ball travel, agree!

Thats another reason i would not stand as the catcher did in that video.
Because that position made her have to cut the throw off and carry it around her own body. Un-necessary.

As far as i understand and reading many rules conversations here.
When the catcher has the ball they can be where they need to be.

***Time to dispell that
your gonna get injured dropping knee down junk.
👉Caught 24 years. In an era when we were allowed to take players out. It was actually expected!
👉was not taken out ever by having my legs clipped out from under me.
My shin guards that were super cheesy compaired to todays equiptment kept me safe.

That set up kept me and many many more catchers safe by having secure strength in our mechanics to not get plowed threw.
These mechanics can also be used with the ability to explosively dive to the side.
*Strong while also Maneuverable

My feedback on this is extensive of over 30 years of teaching catchers!

Glad there are discussions on different mechanics and phylosophy of how to or why.

That said
Happy to be able to share of this success on dfp for others to consider!

Now i'm adding this story.

Had the opportunity to play with a men's fastpitch team
Long Beach Nighthawks.
They asked me to come catch some games. I said thank you I love the opportunity. In a particular game a very big man 6 foot + inches tall probably about 230 240 lb stepping into the box.. he looked at me and said you shouldn't be out here you're going to get hurt. As the inning continued he ended up rounding third base sprinting home, with me at the plate
I used my left knee down strong posture mechanics.
He slid directly into me super hard and was stopped, like hitting a wall,
that wall is nick-named Turbo.
I still remember his face being out 👍🎉

You can drive around your whole life without a seatbelt and never get injured…doesn’t mean it was a smart thing to do.

My main point in this discussion is simply

Prefer facing the throw comming in.
Can see trajectory and then position however.
Left/Right Up/Down.

Ball first for me!
Like playing a hit ball.
Get angle ball in front.

Gotta secure the ball to make the tag!

Enjoy whatever mechanics you choose and hope you find success with it!
