DD’s high school team played in a tournament this weekend and the coach put in a girl that pitched for them last year but has been playing 1st this year. She had a weird delivery where she paused her arm circle at the bottom of the down swing before finishing the pitch. She literally almost stopped her arm in full swing, I have never seen this. Multiple parents said she didn’t do this last year and she was messed up at a camp. I wish I had a video but I didn’t think to take one of her. Any ideas what would cause this?

She has a replant and was called for an illegal pitch. Was also told this is new.

As I've said for many years, although I am not taking credit for inventing or being the only person to know this, crow hopping is caused by a hitch or pause in the arm circle. So it goes to tell you that if she has that hitch or pause, she's going to crow hop and possibly get called for it. EVERY pitcher that crow hops has a pause or hitch in the arm circle, it can be at the bottom or top of the circle but they all have it. Also watch for her push off foot to turn toward 3rd base, if she's a RH pitcher. Another tell tale sign of a crow hopper.
