As an update: we have fired the hitting instructor, I'm going to work with her myself for the next month or so. What we worked on this weekend was getting her hands down to shoulder level and having her weight transfer to the inside of the her back foot inside of the outside. She seemed to pick up those steps pretty well and hit two nice doubles this weekend, which is our goal to have her hit for power. Thanks for all the help in the process.

Read through this entire thread and I am now equal parts smarter about hitting and more confused about teaching hitting. :)

Here's a question that I think can help the OP if someone has a good answer: How do you find a hitting instructor who isn't trash before you spend money (and waste time and potentially develop bad habits) on a few lessons?

Obviously you can't always tell before you get in there and see how they instruct, but let's pretend this is a job interview. What questions are you, the employer, going to ask the instructor before you pay any money? I know, and it's evident from this thread, that people who are really smart about hitting have disagreements, but everybody here agreed that this instructor was bad, so there must be a few areas of common ground that can be turned into deal-breaker questions one can ask. Get the answers wrong, time to look for a different instructor.

Let me just say that she is starting late. She isn't starting until after the ball is released. This results in some rushed actions in which results is some very undesired actions.

A side view might be more helpful. Looks a little better but I'm not sure she has the DBSF problem completely fixed...the follow through is the give away. It's like she got the old "swing across the table" type instruction.

It would be nice to see a pitch from regular distance to see what her timing looks like and what her stride and coil really look like (right now if you look at the stripe on her shorts you can see there is no coil around, the stripe does not move if there was coil you would see it move a little).

Well, truth be told, you are miles ahead of EricF on this topic … yet the forearms are not the entire story in terms of how the barrel is ‘turned’.

Have to be honest, I find this movement very difficult if just focusing on hands or just forearms. Whether it's the proper way to turn the barrel or not, this movement seems very unnatural to me. Then again I am from the school as an one of the posters in this thread, I was taught "see ball, hit ball". Do we really know if the big leaguers and best fastpitch hitters think turn the barrel, or does that happen naturally based on hitting sequence. Do they actually work on turning the barrel with their hands/wrists/forearms... if so, what drill do they use?

I'm sure you mean well but, you are going in the wrong direction with this instruction.

I would say the overwhelming majority do not specifically work on turning the barrel. However the top hitter's turn it when they swing. Also the number of instructors teaching barrel turn is increasing rapidly (See Twitter). There have been many MLB and MiLB hitter's this offseason/season who went through similar drills as shown in the "dilemma" thread.....

Is she trying to hit no stride? I like no strides. Or is she simple late and can't get anything going?

Where's the barrel turn?

Btw, while I think the torso should be tilted she might be a little to low. Although her posture really doesn't matter because she comes out of it during the swing. It might be because the pitch is high, although my gut feeling is she doesn't maintain her posture.

This hitter is way out of sequence. Right now your DD is an all arm swinger. Don't mean to be a bad guy but, you should get outside help.
