4-7 MPH will be noticeable. Because of this I don’t need a radar gun to tell how hard someone is throwing within a couple MPH. I can generally ballpark it from experience.

Visually, I'd say every MPH or so is noticeable, meaning if you watch a girl throwing 47 and another 49 it looks like a big difference (and it is over 40-43 feet) which leads people to thinking girls are pitching much faster than they are.

Height has a little to do with it as well. When DD played 14u she was 5'3". Another pitcher on the team was 5'11". They literally threw the same speed, but you could often hear parents saying "look how fast that girl throws" when the taller kid was pitching. Always made me chuckle a little.

I've been involved with softball for 16 years. I can honestly say I've seen only a handful of young women throwing in the 60's.

This. If you throw 60, you will be a college player, potentially at a high level. If only 3% of softball players play in college, and only a small fraction of those girls are pitchers, then by mere mathematics the number of girls breaking 60 is small.

There are more girls throwing 60 now then ever before. Advances in workouts, nutrition and specialization have helped.
My DD is 15 and throws 60.. just came back from a camp in Virginia where she did it repeatedly and the coaches had her on the pocket radar. It may open doors but it's not an end all be all
Now we hear 63 is what you need to pitch high level D1.
My DD pitched in PA states in June against a Junior who was throwing 63-64. I had my pocket radar.. and she was getting scouted by one Division 2 school whos team was sub .500.
Speed is only 1 part of it. This Junior had just speed.. no change up etc

The other day at tryouts, I found out that my pocket radar must have been broken too.. I was clocking the girls and some had no idea what they threw, so no surprises there, but I got to one and I asked her if she had been clocked before.. and she was like "yeah I have gotten 51 before with my pitching instructor".. I was like ok.. so I took out my gun and clocked her.. I don't think she got over 47.. and I showed her and I think she was a little disappointed.. I will have to tell her my gun is broken..
Yeah, similar happened to me at tryouts but was getting 45 on my ballcoach when she said it should be 50. I tried to then hide what I was getting because she was a nice girl. But, by now she would ask on every pitch - lol. 44, 45, 43, 44. She then asked if it would be faster if I got behind the catcher instead of at the pitcher. :)

Have a Jugs Gun, a Jugs speed cube and a pocket radar. The pocket radar can give low or high readings, that are just way off, but are normally close if they are close to the net and in direct line with the pitcher
