i've seen more than a few injuries eliminated with mask wearing. Anyone that tries to tell me to be better or react faster is living in Fantasy land. And any coach that forbids a player from wearing protective equipment, just opened themselves to a HUGE lawsuit if any player were to get hurt.

My DD plays in college and if she's on the dirt the mask is on PERIOD. It's not open for debate or discussion.

I am confused as to why a coach would recommend not wearing a mask. If a player takes one to the maskless face, then that player is going to be out of commission for innings and perhaps games.

I guess this coach hasn't been to a real tournament where only ten players show up, you have no subs left, and you have to replace a player for injury.

our agreement was if she ever got in the circle without a mask on.....I'd personally walk out there and escort her off the field,

no exceptions and she never tried me on that promise!

Once they get older, there is definitely pressure on the girls who wear a mask compared to the girls who don't, they think it makes them look weak or scared, and they absolutely don't want to listen to common sense from us parents, we're dumb you know!

My first "issue" with this was at an elite team camp at a college in SC, the coach had all the girls throw their masks in a pile up against the fence, he said no masks on his field, and then he began to hit rockets to all the infielders! That one instance started the entire mask debate with us, one college coach who said it's a sign of weakness!

And before anyone says it........"is he going to pay for the medical bills when she gets her nose broken?" I know, I know!
Like ANNASDAD course of action...subtle ....yet.... NOT ;)

I'm on the fence for older players wearing masks in the IF. If you want to wear it, go for it. If you don't, don't wear it. I didn't see one player wearing a mask in the infield except for pitchers in my DD's college games. If they wore masks at the younger ages, they pretty much stopped wearing them around the 14U division. In our league, at the 10U division we require masks for 3B, 1B and pitcher. My DD HAD a mask, until it disappeared. While playing SS in 10U she got popped in the mouth on a line drive. Came out of the game to clean up the blood, but went back out when she felt ready to go.

ETA: 18U coach didn't require masks, but he did mandate evo shield elbow guards!

I might be in the minority. But, I think making masks mandatory is a parents way of not being the bad guy. If you think your DD needs to wear a mask, it shouldn’t matter if the RF or the SS is wearing one as well. It’s your house, your dd, your rules. If your dd doesn’t like it, well that’s too bad. Forcing the org to enforce it is just a way around having to have a tough conversation with your dd.

And for full disclosure my dd stopped wearing a mask to pitch when she was 14u. We had a long discussion about it and in the end I decided to let her decide.

The only place I let dd go without a mask is outfield. And that even bothers me for few reasons. I don’t think they play as confident and I think it’s total peer pressure.
I think the baseball players should wear them
also.

Didnt used to have to wear helmets.
Then helmets an option.
Then helmets mandatory.
Then face mask on helmet mandatory.

( and somewhere in there the chin strap became manadatory)

Some travel and college teams elbow evo shield for hitting is mandatory.

I think its up to the parents. My SS stopped wearing hers in 2nd yr 12s but does carry it in case she's asked to play 3rd.
