Athletic endowments?

No, I meant general endowments. Most schools beyond the power 5 schools don't have an "athletic endowment." Every penny that is brought in is spent. When I think of endowment, I think of a large sum of cash reserves. Smaller D1 schools who receive athletic endowments or donations typically turn around and add that money to the general athletic budget or earmark it for a specific project. There are typically no reserves to tap from at the mid-majors.

Several of the D2 schools who decide to go D1 usually have a strong program in either basketball, football, or hockey that carry the initial burden of the transition. And many of those schools like the prospects of getting into a conference with other schools that have similar academic standards and goals. It's definitely a confluence of things that affects the overall decision of what division to play in......there's not just one factor that drives the bus, because the entire university has to be on board.
