Don't know what school and how big their SB program is but, it may be that the coach made promises to the girls she recruited and is afraid a "walk on stud" may cause more problems with the rest of the team than she is willing to risk. Especially if the player was not expected. She also may think the player is just "shopping" for a team at the last minute. Does not want to disrupt the current team plans for a player that may not be happy, as in Amy's case. Just a guess, but the only reasons I can think of for not offering an immediate spot on the team.
I'd have her talk to the coach and explain that she plans on attending the school whether she plays on the team or not. If that's not enough to get the coach to offer a spot, then she may have to sit out a year. I would just about bet if she shows up for tryouts again next year, she would be on the team.
