What is a "friendly" tournament?

A local Tournament not goverened by any of the santioned bodies (ASA.NSA.USSA) Generally you will find the weaker TB teams and local teams participating in "Frienship" Tournaments.

A friendly is usually 3 or 4 teams get together and play each other. There is no winner of the "tournament". Most coaches try to schedule them against teams similar to theirs to get the kids some competition. The costs are usually much cheaper. Most times it pay the umpire at the plate and bring some balls. One of the teams will have access to fields and they will sponsor it.

Ditto...the important part is "friend" in "friendlies". Generally, rules not related to the actual game (substitution, reporting, lineup cards, etc.) are relaxed and sportsmanship is emphasized. So, one team is a host and the other teams are "guests", and everyone (including parents) are supposed to be good hosts and good guests.

IMHO a 'friendly' is when teams get together and play in a round robin format - every team plays every other team, regardless of won/lose record. Some friendlies will put the top 2 teams against each other in a 'championship' and some you just play and go home. Friendlies are typically more economical than playing in a sanctioned tournament with teams splitting the cost of umpires and providing their own game balls.

Not the case around here at all. The more well known, higher up A ball teams do a lot of the friendly tournaments. It's my understanding that a lot of the California teams do this as well. You get to play the better competition without all of the costs associated with an actual tournament.

Depends on a few things but typically it is an opportunity to get some innings for pitchers lower in the rotation, give Players an opportunity to play other positions that they have been working on. Like every game you still want to win but it is a lower priority.

If you are playing a friendly with a rival it can get out of hand and become a championship game if the adults let it, should not be the propose of the games.

This is the case in our area. Usually early season (1st / 2nd week of April) or Fall. Just a way to get some games in and see where the team is without the worry of seeding and bracket play.

This is how it is in our area, as well. Much of the time, we attempt to set it up with teams comparable/better than we are in order to try to improve. We actually have a 4 team round robin March 24 and then a 3 game round robin on March 31st. The girls are excited to play and the coaches are excited to see where the girls are at. Thank the Lord for major universities who allow us to use their indoor facilities. I can't wait for Spring. Playing indoors, while better than not playing at all, stinks.
