Amy, in OH, when we "scrimmage", it is more of a learning environment. We stop play to instruct or to re-run a particular situation. Oftentimes, each team plays 6 consecutive outs, then switch.

Think as a friendly as a way to play ball but it does not go on your record. It is a good chance for teams to see where they are overall against some of the better teams out there. While not having to pay the premium cost of getting into a tournament. I like them for the fact that you can play kids in other positions to see how they handle it. Friendlies also give you a chance to stretch out a number 3 or 4 pitcher to see how they handle themselves. You do not have to keep them on a short leash. Some times teams like to play up in older divisions to for harder competition.

A lot of A teams in my area play friendlies because they just want to play other A teams and get better. The A team friendlies are pretty exclusive and they do not typically invite any B teams to participate. They are not worried about winning a tournament, all they want to do is improve and qualify for ASA nationals (or get invited to the Premier League World Series).
