I've got strong feelings about this stuff because I was a prosecuting attorney for 4 years dealing with sex abuse...

BUT:

The story sounds like a wonderful, "Dad protecting his children" story, but it doesn't make sense.

Here is a link to the story: Father beats to death alleged child abuser - 19 Action News|Cleveland, OH|Breaking News, Weather, Exclusives

Child molesters come in two varieties: The "abduct and rape" group (e.g., Elizabeth Smart) and the "groom and rape" group (e.g. Jerry Sandusky--which is by far the most dangerous bunch). The dead man, in this case, was neither.

He was with the child, the grandfather and another child. The grandfather and the 2nd child leave, and then the dead man suddenly attacks the 4 YOA girl. I've never heard of a rape or any violent crime happening when the perpetrator had a 100% chance of being identified.

Also, if the dead man was that impulsive, he would have a record a mile long of assaults and rapes. He doesn't...so, my guess is that the story was made up to hide the real events.

Beating to death someone is pretty difficult, unless you use a baseball bat to the head. (The scene from "Casino" is pretty accurate...and those guys never died.)

As an FYI, homicides are much more difficult to prove than people believe. Most of the time, the only other eyewitness is dead.

I doubt the police believe the story. The case is being presented to the grand jury. Prosecuting attorneys (and I was one) like to take really messy cases to the grand jury as a way to the do a "Pontius Pilate" and wash your hands of the whole matter.

But, I have to admit that perps are just getting weirder and more awful all of the time. Just the news from the past week about cannibalism is enough, to turn your stomach. So, we will see how this one plays out.

Ray, I have no problem with a father protecting his child, but there is more to this story that what we are hearing.

Yesterday, it was a barn, today it is an attached garage and now the brush. The story is vague. I don't doubt that the guy may have caught this guy with his daughter, but something isn't adding up. I find it difficult to believe that someone caught in the act would continue the assault to the point of needing to be pulled off. Apparently, if the assault was impulsive, this guy hid his issues well.

Let's hope they get all the info in line and out and hopefully if this guy was justified it doesn't get too crazy.

I'm not so sure about that, Amy. I think fringe elements and behaviors have always been around, but there used to be more 'filters' in place to protect our gentle sensibilities from being assaulted by such horrors. In the age of instant virtual gratification, the dark side of human nature has become no more difficult to discover and explore than our collective wisdom.

Our brain is such a complex organ that it's a wonder most of us manage to go through life with only minor and sporadic malfunctions. I imagine that fundamentally, a cannibal is no more or less able to rationalize or suppress his cravings for human flesh than a softball junkie would be to explain or contain the thrill he experiences while watching a ball being thrown about and getting whacked with a stick.

Seems I remember where a mother beat a man to death with a ball bat when she discovered him molesting her daughter, it was on the local news not long ago.

This is something close to my heart, I’ve worked in law enforcement for over 20 years and I was part of a team that applied for a federal grant that started the Child Abuse Unit at our sheriff department. So many times it’s not the sick stranger, but clergy, family members, teachers, coaches and many people you would never suspect to harm your child.

One of the first the unit investigated was a well respected softball coach and yes he was found guilty and he had been doing it for years. A well respected hair dresser was also one of the first convicted by the unit for molesting a 12 YO boy. One investigation a father confessed to molesting his daughter and told it was the duty of the head of the family to introduce the daughters to woman hood.

We are a large county with 55,000 population there are over 500 convicted sex offenders living and working in the county.

Here is a link to a story about a paraplegic beating a step-father for molesting his 3 YO granddaughter.

This stuff just makes me sick to my stomach. I tell my daughter all the time that monsters almost never look scary. They come in nice clean packages that look like people we are supposed to love or trust. 90% of the reason I coach is because I want to be a good role model and have a positive impact on the lives of these young girls. With the community that I live in I always have at least one girl whom I know that I am the only good thing they see. It breaks my heart. =(
