Is releassing the top hand bad?

I have always taught young hitters and hitters that have just started with me to not release after extension and follow through. Then as the student has gotten more comfortable with the swing or has gotten older a release of the top hand is up to the student JMO. A release is only after extension on the follow through, which my DD does.
