For those of you who do fundraisers for your teams, how do you do it? Are you considered non-profit? Do you have to be non-profit to do fundraising? The more digging around, the more it looks like this process of becoming non-profit might take some time to make happen, and we need to start raising money right away. First off is a raffle. We should be good with a raffle without being non-profit, right?

Any advice, suggestion, and encouragement is appreciated.

I'm thinking you're right. We may have to pump the brakes on the fundraising. We were going to get a Tax ID and DBA quickly, but the other takes time.

You can find another nonprofit ,that might help you until you get your paper work done. You might have to give a small donation or percentage of what you raise ,to use their org.

where I live (NJ) you need a permit to do a raffle. The permit needs to voted on and approved by your town council.

Before you can even apply for the permit, you have to get a gaming license from the state.

The whole process can take 6-8 weeks ( and that's if you already have your non-profit status) :-/

you can fund-raise and not be a non profit. But nothing that is donated will be a tax write off for the doner. Also what type of fundraisers you can do are affected. Candy sales, sure. Raffles probably not.
