At PGF they do a compression test of every bat that will be in play. If they dont pass, they hold them till the end or your team is eliminated. There is a video on YT about how they do the tests.
thanks, do you have to ship them there in advance, must take forever.

Ok confused here, I thought if it had the proper imprint for the sanctioning body in question, it was good. do umpires or TDs really do some sort of physical test on a bat prior to play? how do they determine which bats to test? what is the test? DD is swinging new dual stamp Ghost, hat eto think it will get tossed (at USSSA nationals last week, umps did ask for all Ghosts to be brought out in pregame, but just to check for stamp, and rub their sweaty thumbs on it, do people really try and paint/draw them on?)?

It depends on the tournament ... a run-of-the-mill weekend tournament may not get any equipment checks (note: some organizations do require checks in their rule book ... whether the umpires do it or not is another story).

A State or bigger tournament and you are at least going to have visible/physical inspections of the bats (and helmets) probably every game. Umps are looking for cracks, dents, rattles, signs of wear, etc. They are going to look for the sanction stamp.

A National or equivalent and you are going to get the above and likely going to see a bat compression tester. The validity of those machines is debatable (do some research), but it is an accepted standard nonetheless. The compression test is done before the tournament and the bat is marked as being accepted. During games, the umpires will do a pre-game visual/physical and look for the appropriate mark for that tournament.

It is completely possible for a bat to pass inspection one time, not pass the next time, and then pass again later.

As far as which bats ... it should be ALL bats. When doing inspections, I tell players EVERY bat should be either in front of the dugout (to be checked) or out of the dugout (won’t be used). No bat should stay in the dugout during inspection. (In college, you actually have a checklist and have to write down/notate what bats a team has.)

That is odd that they would even ask to look at just Ghosts, you don’t need to to look for the stamp on them. Each iteration has a distinct look that makes them easy to tell apart.

For slowpitch, there is an area that I go play and every tourney is tested every Saturday. Then you go to
other areas and they don't even have one nor care about it.
