So not only are they not cracking down on illegal pitching as predicted the NCAA is lessening the penalty (base runners no longer advance on an illegal pitch).

The key will be will they call it more. I would think that if they lesson the penalty that they may call it more. Still don't understand the rational to lower it though.

Different regions call it different. Played in a State tournament 2 years ago and was called for 5 illegal pitches called in two games. It was the correct call but very close. Played in a WS two years later in 12U and our team had the only legal pitchers. Some not even close. No illegal pitches called in 16 games.

I generally agree with the above. I will say I don't think too many pitching coaches (if any) actively teach to leap and replant as a bona fide technique. However, there are so many poor instructors trying to make a quick buck that when they only have 30mins a week with a student, they are not spending a lot of time on drag mechanics and it's really left up to the student/parents to educate themselves on proper mechanics. They are not trying to cheat, they just don't know what they don't know and since no umpire is calling an IP they think they are pitching properly. Again, a complex issue.

Bat altering is different. These are adults who are purposely altering a piece of equipment beyond the legal specifications, hiding the alterations, and probably getting paid to do it even though they are not using tbat themselves. They may even be subject to civil liability if a player gets injured by an altered bat.

come to South Texas. IT is being taught everywhere. Yes, actually being taught........ replant is not the exception....it is the rule!

Will be very interesting to see if all the IPs get called now that the "too stiff a penalty" claim is no longer valid under the NCAA rule change.

Agree with Rocketech1 that it sounds like the typical crappy pitching instruction found at fields most everywhere. Would love to see a video of this garbage actually being taught but confident it does not exist. This is not high level instruction, but ignorant bucket parents and coaches.

Pitcher not dragging at all and umpire states she must be above the rubber to call it. There wasn't a hole in front of the rubber the fields were awesome. Saw a local college pitcher rock back and pick her foot up, then pick it up and step down on the rubber, and then replant. She also jumped way toward third and threw a side arm curve ball.

Well, Barnhill got called for 6 illegal pitches vs Kentucky on 3/9/18 and 1 Illegal pitch on 3/11/18. Cheri Kempf was doing the game today. She spent 2+ innings defending Barnhill but eventually had to change he opinion when Barnhill was called for an IP. Cheri also did a video segment(why would she do that if Barnhill was pitching legal) on how Barnhill was pitching Legal. It was a sorry attempt at trying to convince us "non educated ones" on why she was pitching legal. Cheri and the announcer made a comment in the later innings that Barnhill "IF" she is pitching Illegal she as the ability to change.

I hope other watched. I would like your take on them defending and coming to the back of Barnhill(wouldn't expect anything else from Cheri).

Do you remember roughly what inning Cheri did the video segment? I would like to go back and see how what she said but don't want to watch the whole game......Thanks!

I just answered my own question. It was the middle of the 3rd in Kempf's Corner. Basically showed the difference between an illegal crowhop and what looks illegal but actually has a drag line. I have never had issues with this part, however, she then goes on to see no woman in college softball can replant and push off again like they do in the men's game. She made it sound like it was impossible to do. I disagree with her.
