The replies so far are great...I like hearing peoples stories on this and how they deal with it, specifically from an athletics point of view. I want to start off by saying that my DD has ADD and not ADHD. Though they are usually lumped together, she doesn't display any of the hyper-activity or uncontrolable urges sometimes displayed in ADHD.
From a diagnosis stand point, I think its important to fully understand what the condition is...it IS a brain issue, NOT a behavior issue. That said, I do believe that any diagnosis should be done with a neurologist and not a psychiatrist. We went to a neurologist for our diagnosis and have experienced great results right from the start, where others I have met mostly all went to psychiatrists and have their ups and downs with their medications. We were put on a 5mg generic Adderall, which is the lowest does you can get, and it straightened us out. These are our results only and I'm fully aware that everyone will have different experiences. My point is, we were given the lowest dose first, then the plan was to work up from there. Not just throw say 15mg and see how it shakes out. We stayed with the 5mg for 2 years and all was well. Last year we had to increase our dose to 10mg..I don't believe there was any immunity built up, but rather our growth over a 2yr period that required the increase
redhot- to answer you previous question about other meds we take with our Rx...nothing. At least for us, there seems to be no unwanted side effects that would require another Rx.
Lozza- i do value my Dr.'s opinion. My issue was simply what he calls competitive softball, and what I call competitive softball may be two totally different animals. I've seen plenty of people go to watch a travel softball tourney for the first time and have been in almost total shock at what they see on the field. They walk in thinking they are basically going to watch a LL rec game, then they see the level of play and are quite suprised at the level of play. As far as me knowing more than the Dr., I don't claim that, but I do believe I shouldn't take everything he says as golden either. People seem to forget that even the guy/girl who graduates last in their class still get to hang a certification on their wall. I felt this forum was the best place to get feedback on girls with ADD who play competitive softball. I had what i consider to be a very specific question, I felt this was the best place to hear results.
My general observations are that she seems to have faster reaction times without the meds, better focus/descision making skills but slower reaction times while on. Perhaps I'm seeing what I want to see...perhaps she IS falling in line with most of the other talent pool, and not a travel level player anymore...It is what it is I guess, but I did want to ask others what their experiences are. What I'm getting from most of this is that her Dr. in the end may be correct..the meds don't have any effect. I understand how they work..they slow everything down so the patient can absorb what they see. It seemed like a totally logical question to me
