IMO, basketball. It seems young ladies tend to have ACL tears a lot in basketball. I know a young lady who tore her ACL last year and it cost her a scholarship to a pretty good school.

DD tore her ACL playing basketball her freshman year. The ortho told her that over 95% of the torn ACLs he saw in female athletes were basketball related injuries. When his daughter got into high school she stopped playing basketball because of that. She was an awesome volleyball and basketball player. She's now going D1 on a track scholarship.

When I tore my ACL in high school playing basketball a long time ago, my doctor told me soccer and skiing accounted for the most ACL tears. I did a quick search to see if this is still true, and it is. As far as ACL injuries at the high school level, girls' soccer accounts for the most ACL injuries, followed by football and basketball (2019).

From our personal experience...the repetitive motion used by DD being a pitcher in softball in addition to being a hitter in volleyball contributed to an L5 pars fracture (two years ago). Of course, the softball coach blamed volleyball, and the volleyball coach blamed softball. A friend's DD who also does both has just been diagnosed with an L4 pars fracture.

IMO, cheerleading or soccer. I've seen and heard of too many girls messing up their backs, knees and ankles doing stunts, cheerleading. Plus I've heard of other catastrophic injuries happening to girls in cheerleading where a stunt got messed up. In soccer, I've heard of girls costing themselves their seasons messing up with ACL tears, sprained ankles and broken legs.

last i saw, i believe soccer still has the highest numbers of injury - including concussion - but basketball is high in terms of 'catastrophic' type injuries

Soccer.....any time you are looking for an answer to a 'worst sport' question soccer is always the answer.

But seriously, if you are talking about from an over-use or general health viewpoint, I don't think there is any sport that would be bad. There are sports with a higher chance of general injury, but something due to over-use? Unless your DD has a repetitive use injury to begin with, I can't think of anything that stands out from putting stress on the same joints/ligaments as softball does except perhaps baseball. The one exception would be if she is a C and needs to give her knees a break, then perhaps VB?

IMHO, a second sport is nearly always better than out of season sport-specific training if over-use is the issue you are trying to avoid.
I kind of think soccer would be the best sport to play. Mind you I don't like it at all (except when it's world cup time). But I'd say out of all the athletes, soccer players have to be in the best shape. Two 45 minute periods when they are always in motion, running, jogging, walking....
And to think about it, if you look at female sports, softball probably has the highest percent of out of shape players in any of the female sports.

I'll second the cheerleading. That was my niece's primary sport - lots of knee and ankle injuries, and concussions are always an issue as well (flying limbs galore...).
