This is a real thing. Many NAIA and D3 schools are financially insolvent, or very close to it. They know that parents want to brag that their kids play college ball, and use that as a revenue stream that may keep the college doors open. In many cases for marginal prospects, picking a higher ranked academic university and playing club ball would be a better option.
Oddly enough, there have been at least three D2 schools who have either closed, will close, or dissolved their athletic programs in NY in the last 10 years.

That's the bonus holy mackerel what is the pay?

Since the 73rd pick in the draft is going to be toiling away in the minors for several years before making it, if he ever does, that signing bonus is making up for him agreeing to make less than minimum wage for a while.

Some pay is better than nothing.

+ future Pro opportunity/ possibility

Wouldn't gripe if they had this in softball

Hard to imagine getting a 15 million dollar signing bonus and then get 250 bucks a week. Not sure that type of pay structure is the best for development.

Nobody gets $15 million. The largest bonus ever went to Paul Skenes this past draft at $9.2 million.

Most guys get a bonus that's a nice lump sum, but it's hardly life altering, especially considering the actual pay is so low. Even a million dollar bonus isn't something a 21-year-old can make last forever.
