She has hit a lot of balls here. If let it get deeper is wrong to say? What would be a better approach? Yes, thanks for starting this Thread J.

Letting the ball get deeper isn't a bad queue based on the movement pattern being used.. ABAF pattern has a timing window for one speed and limits your zone due to the hands arms and body swinging together.. Add in not wanting to get jammed folks will start there abaf pattern earlier.

Two problems I have with coaches saying(how they say it) let it get deep;

1. It's too vague. Explain to the hitter what you mean by letting it get deep. Show them, perform drills to reinforce it, just don't say "wait longer".
2. Coaches generalize based on result. Coaches see a hitter pulling the ball over and over and they say "Let it get deep". Coaches need to spend more time understanding why the hitter is pulling the ball. It could be mechanical issue and not a timing one.

I like what Donaldson has to say about hitting. He fully recognizes that most damage is done out front. However he says you can't have the mindset of the trying to hit the ball out front. He makes you susceptible to off speed and out side pitches

Sounds like some of the players are plagued with an ABAF pattern. Out of curiosity what type of launch sequence do you teach? Ground up or middle out, assuming you understand the lingo difference. What about the loading pattern? Middle out, pull the rubber band back, hold the rubber band back and stretch it forward, again assuming you know the lingo and understand the differences.

Yes I’ve got some ABAF hitters. I teach ground up, sequence. I teach get into back butt check, turn belt buckle backward some and maintain that during the stride for lower body. Upper body, anchor the scap, stretch, get away from hands. The core turns the body. Anchor the rear foot. I just don’t have enough time to tweak my travel ball hitters. High school players I can tweak them. I don’t do hitting lessons, turn them down frequently lol

Nice post. Pitch recognition with posture maintained = “putting a good swing on it”

that’s the exact cue I use ! ‘Put a good swing on something’. Doesn’t matter the count or the kid. To me it makes them visualize their ‘best’ swing and takes pressure off of the situation. Control what you can... yourself.

If a coach is only going to say hit it deep without any other tangible instruction they would probably be better off giving the hitter a goal (in BP) e.g. hit hard line drives over the 2B head..
Awesome thing to do to a change-up. Confuses mean catchers :devilish:

Exactly J..... that is the reason I was hoping someone would start the thread.... I want to know the how..... if a hitter is going to let the ball get deeper something needs to change in the movement pattern. What is that something that they are looking for..... a lot of people said lunging..... I get that but it isn’t the root cause of the issue and will just bound the hitter up if the pattern isn’t changed. The cue isn’t a magic wand that will just put a hitter in a better movement pattern......

Beating the pitcher to your spot (hitting position) is a cue I've been using lately. Getting them out there sooner will expose them if they are not sequencing correctly. If they are ABAF it's not a great position for them. It helps them self correct on next swing.

TDS has talked about hitters having to become vulnerable. Getting out there sooner with the right sequence does that. Then letting it get deep is a non issue.

Okay, what type of tweaks would you do to the players that are ABAF? What actions need to be performed to get them out of that pattern? Drill examples would be helpful.......
