FP, do you see the core contraction here ?

Yes, along with several other movements.

They power the ‘turn’ .. the rest of the body helps swing the bat too. The legs and hips mainly. If the legs don’t stabilize it’s just a puff of power or a merry go round. No direction. Imo it’s hit against the front and back leg as well as the hips. Try throwing a med ball without rotating from a batting stance underhand as far as you can. If spinning, close off a bit and try again.

you mentioned Yeager this morning... remember the bucket drill he did? Mimic that without rotating. Thats the feel for me.

I have been involved in these forums for nearly 7 years. And every time the subject of the core pattern came up, the impression I always got is that the obliques are the power source for the swing. I always have considered the abdominal muscles very important in the entire process, but the power itself comes from larger muscles. In fact, in a series of PMs I had 5 or 6 years ago, I brought up an example from my days in college. I'm a Penn State grad and spent time lifting weights with several members of the wrestling team. While training with them, they pointed out a few things to me concerning breathing and abdominal use during certain actions including the bench press. By adding their techniques, I was able to add 10 to 15 pounds to my max in a short period of time. It was my pecs and other muscles that lifted the weight, but the core function helped facilitate it.

What are the larger muscles and how do they power the swing ?

How do the obliques power the swing? Do you consider the obliques to be more powerful than the lats and other back muscles? What about the glutes and other upper leg muscles?

FP, the oblique contraction from a leveraged position engages all available resources on all sides of the body.. I have been saying this forever..

JD, isn't leveraged at this point to engage all available resources.

Here's a nice example of using the bigger muscles to initiate/power the swing.

No bites... It's hip flexors.

This is a good example of how strong the hips are compared to the obliques. You do this exercise where hip flexors do almost all of the work yet your abs feel tired/strained. And the hip flexors think they are out for a stroll.

The obliques play their part, but they are weak muscles compared to the hips.

The "X Pattern" that bonds promotes is important because you need to swing the bat down that line so your obliques can have the path of least resistance since that is the way they contract. The obliques are the only muscles that can exert the force at this important phase of the swing so you must optimize it since they are so relatively weak.

Obliques are pretty important but they dont cure cancer.
