If you look at the hand path it is fairly direct to the ball. The path of the barrel isn't so direct.
What do you mean by 'fairly' direct to the ball. Stan is turning the barrel to the ball with his hands. His hands are above the ball at contact. He does match the plane of the ball with a good barrel path. He does have a low 'finish'.

Hands above the ball at contact? If so, just barely. IMO he has a low finish because his hands are direct to the ball, pretty much on the same plane as the barrel. In the 2nd pic it looks to me like his barrel is on a slight downward plane even out to extension.

Barely...still means that the hands are above the ball.
his hands are direct to the ball,
His BARREL is 'directed' or turned to the ball by the hands. But, what ever......

So...
Point is that's why the follow through is low.
His BARREL his 'directed' or turned to the ball by the hands. But, what ever......
And yes his BARREL is directed or turned by the hands.. again, so what? His hands are barely above the ball resulting in a low finish. Kind of hard to work the barrel back up when your hands are at the same height as the ball.

It is semantics your all correct! FFS just showed what Stan and that era was thinking . If you want to get semantical. Stan turns(directs) the barrel to a percieved spot in line(inside) with the ball all the while keeping his barrel above the ball and inline so he can be direct as possible. His low finish is because he was on plane for a long time(level)and was on time . The oldies planed low pitches by bending down not by extending their hands/arms. If you extend down with your arms , they will come back higher because of the momentum of your swing.
