So, high school season is about to end, and with some time opening up in her schedule, my 9th-grade DD is wanting to do strength & agility. She wants to play college softball, so that's the prime motivation, to get fitter, faster, stronger. She dabbled in it over the winter and kept up a decent routine at home with small weights, but she's never be on a schedule for a long period of time.

How much time spent on strength & agility is appropriate and realistic during the travel-ball season?

At the facility that she would be attending, they have 1-hour classes in both strength (basically weight lifting) and agility (speed work, etc.). So, for example, she could go 4 times/week, getting in 2 hours of each. A friend of hers goes only twice/week, but works 2 hours at a time (hour of speed/agility, hour of strength).

The question isn't merely how much to work out. That would be easy if that's all she did.

But rather, but how much to work out while also playing a lot of softball. She'll be playing 2-3 tournaments/month, with several trips out of state this year.

DD did Cross-Fit during the summer, she got up at 7 am 5 days a week and workouts lasted for about an hour. She advised it helped her during college season making college workouts much easier for her. I think a few here have DD who do Cross-Fit.

So she did that the summer before going to college? That's a good effort.

Let's say she was still in high school. What do you think she could handle while also in school (not summer) and also playing 2-3 tournaments/weekend?

My DD does a P90x3 routine about 3 times per week. It is just 30 minutes and it helps her stay in shape and get stronger - and you don't need anything but a small space to do it in.

IMO it would have helped her in HS and travel ball, how much is good and how much is too much?

I would say listen to your body, if you feel tired and run down take a day or two off, if you still have energy then continue on a daily schedule JMO.

DD was doing something like that this winter. Once school ball started, she stopped. She's now eager to go back at it, but doesn't think she would be able to keep it up on her own. Her school team did once/week workouts at a stength/agility place. She liked that. That's what we're looking at.

I could always motivate myself into working out on my own, but DD needs outside motivation at times. This may or may not be a female thing.

DD sees a sports-specific S/A trainer. It really helps her stay in shape. DD is very strong naturally (trainer is always surprised at how well she jumps into workouts if he hasn't seen her in a couple of weeks...often accuses her of cheating on him ;) ). However, during the school year, she is really only able to get in one work out per week with him...but she does workout 2 other times during week in the school gym. This summer will change...she will probably see her trainer 3x week (ouch - my bank account).

An off the side question - can anyone explain why S/A is known for preventing injuries? I know it makes them stronger, but how does it prevent injuries...especially if overused?

Good question. That's another motivation for my daughter. She frequently has little aches and pains (knee, shoulder, back). My hope is that fitness training would alleviate it, and my fear is that it will make it worse.
