Strangest thing an Umpire has said to you?

I had to umpire a game at our league as the umps didn’t show, I had no team to coach at that timeslot So I thought why not. The parents behind the fence were grumbling at just about every call (I’m starting to think it’s a hobby of theirs) so in between innings I leant against the fence and...

    Hitting the Change Up

If it’s a timing thing, maybe try changing the way they approach the “hit”. If their only mental/verbal cue is hit then it might help to add an AND into it. The AND is the toe touch, this allows time for a correction. It might sound overly simplified but I have seen it help.

    Rough weekend...

communication, communication, communication. As coaches our job is to develop teams so that EVERY player can take the field and be effective. Explain to the players that hard work pays off but that everybody has a bad day occasionally and being benched is no reflection of their talents. I've...

How to make these girls hit the ball?? 10U

I could be totally wrong here, but 9u I think it should be all about "how to". Take away any pressure to WIN (I know mums and dads pay a lot and want results) let the team love the game and get good at it through passion and constructive, positive coaching.

Does this make me a dirt bag?

I suppose it all depends on whether your DD can get there without you, if yes then no problems going fishing. (Unless you are also the coach, then you should probably be there) otherwise what's the harm, she has the best game ever...you get to hear her tell it, sometimes it's better than seeing...

    DFP Hitting Experts #2

Great thread Cannonball! Glad I get to read stories like this at the beginning of DDs and my journey. Thanks.

You Know Your Daughter Plays Fastpitch if . . .

After a tournament I'm guaranteed to have a pair of earrings in my wallet or pocket because DD throws them from the dugout at me.

    Swinging at bad pitches

Pitch selection requires confidence in the box, and nothing destroys confidence in young players like punishment. I would spend more time on facing pitches in practice to get them comfortable in their pitch selection and to know where their "spot" is. Maybe get them to verbalise with a yes...

    Weak wrists

Try practicing with a tee set up for outside pitch or just set up around back hip so your DD learns to hit with power deep in the zone and doesn't rely on hitting way out front for power. Imagine hitting a nail with a hammer, your wrists aren't locked, you "flick" (for want of a better term) the...

    Chants during back swing

Pitchers need to know that the louder the opp team gets the more scared they are, take it as a compliment, smile and K them.

    A Dad's Swing...

I could be wrong but I think it's the top hand pulling backwards (like drawing a bow) while you step forward that gives the look of your hands staying in place while the body moves forward. And I think FFS is saying that if you start with full range of motion in the swing you can finish with...

how to launch faster and get swing out from body?

1 difference is point of contact, the ball needs to get deeper in the zone before she hits it, so maybe more front toss training. Another is there is no stride in the game swing, and the bat starts more horizontal, I think front toss training can help her feel more at ease with her swing in the...

    Base Running Question

How is it obstruction when the 1st base was receiving/had already received the ball?

Sequencing the hip load/coil and scap load!

    Good discussion. Good description.

    Do this? OR, do this??

What's frustrating is when you point out the difference in what people teach to what good pitchers do they say something along the lines of that's a such and such pitch (insert rise drop change). They won't admit that IR is how ALL the pitches look.

    Reverse Hanson Principle at work

I think sometimes people get so blinded by an idea that they literally can't see the fault in it. Usually it means they don't totally understand what was told or shown to them so they bluff the rest, after a while they start to believe their own bluff. If reading the posts here has taught me...

    Great People here at DFP

I live in Australia and while popular softball is nowhere near as big as it is in the US and clinics etc are rare to non existent so DFP is my main source for knowledge about all aspects of the game. I would like to thank all the posters on the hitting technical and practical pages, who am I...

    My favorite hitting drill is.....

Hi guys, firstly thanks to EVERYONE who posts on this site. I am relatively new to softball coaching(I coach my 12 yr old daughters team with another dad) and I find the majority of the info on this site helpful and even the ideas that don't work for me send me out looking for why it doesn't and...

    Perfect Softball Swing???? Hmmmm!

She mentions the follow through after extension being important to achieve "Full transfer of momentum to the ball". Now after contact and extension wouldn't you hope the ball was going anywhere but where your bat follows through to. Too many catch phrases and not enough simple truth.

    Do you want it?

I think I am on the same page as the OP, and for me (new to coaching softball) wanting IT is maybe less important than wanting to be at training or at the game. Youth players need to be engaged at practice and need to enjoy playing the game, that's what a coach is there for I believe, as long as...
