My idea of a tough tournament changed over the years. In the younger years there were tough tourneys or so I thought. In 16u/18U all tourneys were just tourneys.

Currently in travel ball there can definitely be a large disparity in the competitiveness of teams that are signed up for the same tournament venues.
Once you get to the 16U/18U TD's try to divide the better teams in different pools.
10/12/14's not as much.

not really happening in so cal.What divides the crowd is pool play on Saturday and tournament Day on Sunday.
Other than that lots of examples of mixed-matched talent definitely seen on Saturday pool play type events and in showcases with five or six assigned games.
Think this is why there are the top tier teams hosting invites where they select who they want to attend.
Too many teams now player scrounging picking up anybody they can get to be on a roster,
instead of situations where teams would post tryouts and be more selective.
Tryouts are fading for many average teams. Even in 16s and 18s.
