1 week ago my daughter was warming up to pitch before a game and threw a drop ball. When she did her shoulder started hurting. She started pitching to a couple of batters and the pain was still there. She told the coach and he pulled her out. I thought it was probably a pulled muscle or something. We have iced her shoulder once a day every day since last Saturday. It does not hurt unless she throws or pitches. She has rested her arm the whole week and it thought it would have gotten better. We went to softball practice today and there is still pain when she throws. I now realize that maybe I should take her in to see a doctor. I am not sure if I should take her to her regular pediatrician or a chiropractor or specialist? Has anyone been through this? Who should I take her to? Btw... She is 14 and she sees a pitching coach who thinks the pain is do to overuse. My daughter pitched about once a week over the winter break and now that softball season is here she is pitching 4 days a week and therefore needs some rest. She told us to take a few days off. So since it has been 7 days and not any better I am getting concerned. Any advise would be appreciated!

I think you always start with your regular pediatrician; they might direct you somewhere else but in my opinion that is always the place to start.

The only time you should skip them is if there is an emergency, in that case you should forward them the records of your visit to the emergency room.

Go to your normal doctor first, they will assess and send you onto the best person for her injury.

Until you've seen the second doctor, no pitching. At all. You don't know what you're dealing with and you don't want to risk causing permenant injury.

When my insurance allows it, I go straight to the orthopedist. A regular GP, isn't going to know anything. I've been through this 3 times (both of my shoulders and then, my DD). The best shoulder guy that I saw was Dr. Daniel Adair, in Springfield, IL.

A lot of people don't like chiropractors, but that is your own choice. Twice recently, my osteopath was able to pop my back into place in about 5 seconds. But, you need to find out what the injury is, what caused it and how she is going to avoid it in the future.

I rehabbed both shoulders and I work diligently almost every day, exercising my shoulders so I don't lose range of motion.

PM me and i can direct you to the programs on the Internet. Good luck. Shoulder pain is one of the most awful pains I have ever experienced.

We took our daughter to the chiropractor today and he told us she had bicept tendonitis. This was do to the fact that over the holidays she pitched very little and now that peak softball season is here we are pitching 4 days a week. It is an overuse injury. He said at least a month off, if not more.

Goodness! That is painful. I had that but I was 25. I had to roll a bag of ice up in the sleeve of my t-shirt to even be able to drive home after games.

I am glad that it is temporary and now you can ease her back in and do proper warm ups and cool downs.

My DD pulled a butt muscle in a game and had a bag of ice wrapped to her hiney---had to take her out to eat like that!
