I remember reading on here something about this- could've been in Marc's blog or e-mail.
14yo DD has a problem with the elbow of her throwing arm. Found out about it recently, spring season just ended days ago. DD doesn't usually complain until it's too late. Been a problem for a few weeks now.
she typically plays spring and summer ball and the last two years she's also played winter ball from Nov to early April. She figureskates year round, played soccer in the fall , gave up gymnastics a year ago so Softball is like her only sport year round except for a couple months in the fall.
She said it's ok throwing easy, but sometimes when she throws hard it hurts and then she can't throw well for the rest of the game. It's like she's on borrowed time until she has to throw hard and then she's screwed for the rest of the game. The bad part here is DD has a great arm. I also don't know if it hurts when she passes a certain point of force or if sometimes it's more resilient and goes further before it "goes bad"
I need to start with her PCP and get a referral to a specialist, but I'm wondering how to proceed? Does this sound like a repetitive use injury? Maybe a flaw in her mechanics (she does tend to be lazy)? what should I look for in a specialist? I'm thinking I should probably have a coach of some sort check out her mechanics to see if she's doing something wrong that has created the problem other than use.
Any recommendations would be gretly appreciated!
thank you.
