I remember reading on here something about this- could've been in Marc's blog or e-mail.
14yo DD has a problem with the elbow of her throwing arm. Found out about it recently, spring season just ended days ago. DD doesn't usually complain until it's too late. Been a problem for a few weeks now.

she typically plays spring and summer ball and the last two years she's also played winter ball from Nov to early April. She figureskates year round, played soccer in the fall , gave up gymnastics a year ago so Softball is like her only sport year round except for a couple months in the fall.

She said it's ok throwing easy, but sometimes when she throws hard it hurts and then she can't throw well for the rest of the game. It's like she's on borrowed time until she has to throw hard and then she's screwed for the rest of the game. The bad part here is DD has a great arm. I also don't know if it hurts when she passes a certain point of force or if sometimes it's more resilient and goes further before it "goes bad"

I need to start with her PCP and get a referral to a specialist, but I'm wondering how to proceed? Does this sound like a repetitive use injury? Maybe a flaw in her mechanics (she does tend to be lazy)? what should I look for in a specialist? I'm thinking I should probably have a coach of some sort check out her mechanics to see if she's doing something wrong that has created the problem other than use.

Any recommendations would be gretly appreciated!

thank you.

The problem could be so many things. Let me say this. M. Candrea says that the elite athletes that he sees coming into his program aren't playing catch enough and aren't doing it correctly. He has to teach them at 18 YOs to play catch.
So, I am thinking - mechanics.

You are doing the right thing by asking a specialist.

I would proceed with ice, rest, mild stretching and I might try to find a HS baseball type coach to review her mechanics.

Here is a good throwing program, Jaeger Sports Baseball. They have a web site.

Amy is dead on. Many college coaches are saying the same thing. Great pitcher but can't field the ball or catch it. I suggest the Specialist. I have a dd that we had been to the Dr and her problem didn't go away. Active softball, track and soccer. Kept getting tightness in her upper thigh. Told the ice, rest, stretching , just made it worse. Went to a sports specialist who told us , after X rays the above was the worse thing we could be doing. We had to apply a heated wrap , each day and now no issues.

"Kept getting tightness in her upper thigh."

Yes, there I apply heat. I use massage type stones that are heated just hot to the touch, in water.

That same treatment cured my own sciatica.

Amy I wish I had posted this about 6 months ago and we wouldn't have went thru all the Dr Visits. You hit it right on with the heat and massage and it went away. Something about toxins in the muscle group.

I will send my bill. :)

But, actually you did the right thing by taking her to the doctor. Heck, it could have been anything.
