Indoor track...shot put

My neighbor has won states in shot put the last two years and is trying to get my DD to do it for indoor track. Would this be too hard on the shoulder or great because of the weight training they do? Her varsity coach saw her at a clinic and told her he wanted her to do track to get in shape for spring ball but she doesn't want to do too much running
