if given the opportunity some girls would not wear helmets during the game. Why would you allow them to hit without a helmet. Is it really that uncomfortable? What is the reason for not wanting to wear it. I think it has to do with how they perceive others view them for being a sissy. Same with the facemask in the field.
That said, my DD has a tendency to whack herself in the head with her own bat on an alarming basis. A helmet is a good thing for her pretty much all the time.

Have you ever worn a helmet with a facemask? It's terrible.
I'm not saying they shouldn't wear them; they absolutely should. But they're really, really uncomfortable. They limit vision pretty significantly, too. I felt completely trapped when I put one on while demonstrating some base running skill.
So, yes, they've gotta wear them, but I wouldn't use comfort level as an argument for why they should.
This ^^^.

In college I was hitting in an outdoor cage and somehow managed to foul a ball off which eventually whacked me in the mouth. I have no idea how it happened but it required a few stitches!!
A surprising ricochet is understandable. Bonking yourself in the head with the bat that's in your own hands is just...ummm...really not smart. My DD's barrel control seems pretty decent when she's trying to hit a moving ball. Any other time, all bets are off.
