Has anyone ever had umpire interference?

when working first in a three person crew the first base umpire should be trailing the runner not in her way.. it was the umpire being lazy and not paying attention. that being said bad break for your daughter

When working a 3-umpire system, the umpire should be inside the diamond long before the BR ever gets close to 1B. If trailing the runner, 2B is uncovered.

DD was on second when there is a hit up the middle. DD rounds third and slows up almost coming to a stop and then races to home barely beating the throw. Seems the home plate ump decided the bat was in a precarious position and he should move it. He gets in the base path and bends over. DD said all she could see was a big grey but in the base line and she was afraid she'd run into him.

A parent (not me) yelled that he should not be there. He yelled back the bat was in the way and someone could trip.

Isn't the bat part of the field of play if left in the baseline and the catcher or a runner does not pick it up?

Yes, once the bat is out of the batters hands and stationary on the field it becomes part of the field. We have been instructed to leave the bat where it is. Catchers will typically take note of where the bat ended up and if the umpire moves it then it may very well cause more problems than it fixes. The umpire also has the responsibility of watching for any infractions during the play. Reaching down to pick up the bat detracts from the ability to see the action on the field.

Another reason we have been told to never touch the bat (at least locally) is that apparently an umpire was accused of damaging a bat in the process of moving it and a claim was filed against them.
