That's not been my experience in NOVA. At the Class 6 state championships, the VHSL announcers played random walkup songs for every player and played them so loud that our pitcher often had to wait for the song to end to get the pitch signal from the coach because she could not hear him yelling from the dugout. Every single game we played this year had walk up songs for the home team and music between innings.
Same for my JV experience in NoVA - and I believe Varsity was similar.

2 years ago we attended USSSA Nationals in Nashville - one team used drumsticks on bucket lids. I checked, and at the time could not find any USSSA rule against noisemakers. So they may be exception to the other rulesets.

That was not the Umpires experience either when I informed him that walk up music was not allowed in VHSL ... He initially resisted but then asked them to shut it down for the game and he would get clarification ... Which he did and we later discussed that he had no idea ... My AD confirmed it with VHSL because it caused a stink .... I want to guess if you look back about 7 or 8 years, or ask your AD to reach out to VHSL you'll get an answer ... Actually, at the time this happened I had just read it in one of their monthly AD newsletters (updates?) that they send out ... It had always bothered me at this particular school and many times I had to ask them to turn down the music ... They would turn it down for an inning and then jack it back up. I feel that this school did / does it intentionally to upset the defense and inhibit communication as you point out.

Also, it only stopped them from doing it when playing us ... It was over-looked or allowed by Umpires when playing other teams who didn't know the rules or didn't care.

This was 7 or 8 years ago and I am currently not coaching, they could have changed the rule back I suppose .... ???

* Just to clarify; I like music and I'm a musician.

How does VHSL word their rule? Most places that have a rule against artificial noisemakers specify the dugout as the source. If they are playing it from the press box, there isn't much to be done.

USA does not specify the dugout ... but in the same section they also say wearing mismatched under-garments or rolling up your sleeves is unsporting behavior.

Sadly, yes, I know an umpire who ejected a "big" girl for not tucking in her jersey. Maybe her walk up song should have been "I'm too sexy for my shirt, too sexy for my shirt ..."

The rule I'm talking about was not a NFHS rule, but a VHSL rule ... I don't know of anything in U-trip, ASA, NSA or any other rule set that would specifically disallow walk up music ... However, if it delayed the game I would be looking for a strike on the batter.

Few years back, so I'm going by my memory which is less than perfect ... BUT, I believe it was something like "Walk up music is prohibited and music is only to be broadcast during dead ball periods in between innings"

From a 2018 article:
VHSL silences walk-up music

VHSL Information and Communication Specialist Mike McCall said the rule — of which offending teams are subject to a sportsmanship violation — was put in place prior to the 2013 season for both baseball and softball, although most of the area’s coaches were unaware that such a rule was even in place. https://www.nvdaily.com/sports/cent...cle_995e74bb-f8eb-5a2c-aace-62152b41734d.html

The problem isn't the type of music they listen to, it's making all of us subject to the music they listen to.
In recent years it has become common for people to play music on the golf course. Drives me up the wall. I don't want to hear it. If you want to listen to music on the golf course please use ear buds. Maybe we could do the same thing in softball.
I'm that guy. I like to play music on the course, but it's usually Widespread Panic or Yacht Rock...at low volume. If I'm on the green and I can hear the music, I turn it down. I do have respect for others.

Golf requires rhythm. Not all music has the same beat per minute or rhythm. You would probably play better if you listened to songs that rhythm matched your optimal swing rhythm.

I am glad none of my DDs teams have had walk up or even warmup music. My son's teams do it for one event every year, his song of choice this year was the Sponge Bob Square Pants theme song "Are you ready kids!!"
