We had the players vote and they decided the first 9 players, HC then got to pick any 3 players they wanted.

Seemed to work OK.

Having a liked player is not bad even if they will never see the field.

All Stars is not popular among my students. I was shocked to find this out. The top pitcher in the league is leaving on vacation and there are only 15, that even want to be considered.

It is the same thing, in a nearby town. The better players are opting out.

I assume it's a case of ''if we wanted to play tournaments, we would've got on a travel team.'' ... Makes sense. In my day, all-stars was a huge deal. It was the only opportunity to keep playing.

I would have each parent pick 2-3 players on the team depending on how many players from each team make the All Star Game, 1 parent per child gets to vote. You can not vote for your own child. Add up the votes and that is who makes the All Star Game.
