Batter runner leaves baseline to avoid tag

Does the ump call this, or does the defensive team have to appeal?

If the umpire sees it they call the out and the ball remains live. It is not an appeal play.

That's what I thought. We had a situation where the batter left the baseline to avoid a tag. The coach came out and discussed with the home plate ump. Between innings the base ump told the first base coach that the runner did leave the baseline. But the manager appealed to the wrong ump, since it was his call she should have spoken to him. Well if he knew the runner left the baseline, he should have called it in the first place.

You have someone who doesn't have a clue. As noted, it is not an appeal. And the "wrong ump" thing is a crock of bull. You are correct, if ANY umpire saw the violation, it should have been called immediately.
