Are pitchers required to stay within the 24” lines?

Does anyone know the logic behind the rule?
Its to keep pitchers from going way outside the width of the pitching plate and throwing the ball at an extreme angle across the plate. When NCAA first implemented the lines, they were nicknamed the Mowatt lines after a UofA pitcher. You can probably find videos on youtube of her pitching.

My bad. I didn’t make myself clear. I understand the 24” rule. What I don’t understand is the 25” measurement. Why not 24” from beginning to end?

Just watched them draw the lines.....it goes 24" to 25" for only one reason......they run a string from the edge of the rubber to the lines of the box, and that's what the dimensions work out to be......its simply for ease of set up
