I bought a full set of gear while DD was a Pitcher because a ball in the dirt chipped my shin bone so I know your pain well. When she became a catcher second year of 14U, she was actually big/tall enough to inherit my gear.

I haven't thrown her front toss without a screen since she was 9 and took out a former MLB player that was front tossing to her in coach pitch during an All-Star game. After that, after every pitch to her, he'd run back and behind the 1st baseman after releasing the pitch. It was quite comical to see this big burly guy run and hide behind a 9 year old girl after every pitch.
I have seen her hit, don't blame you.

LOVED my time as a bucket dad and would not trade it for anything, bumps and bruises included!

Same with me. I started this thread saying my first black and blue mark earned me the right to really call myself a bucket dad.

It's stories like this that make me happy that my DD is a catcher.

My other DD is a catcher, and many times I am glad they don't practice together well. There are moments when I wish they would practice together to give me a break, but having time alone with each one of them is something I rarely have outside of softball practice. It is very much worth it.

I took one on the shin this past weekend working with our pitchers while team took BP in the cages... after the session I was standing around chatting with one of the Dads, and happen to look down at my shin, to see a HUGE goose egg had formed. It looked worse than it felt.

After seeing a father on crutches with a fractured shin in a cast from warming up a TB pitcher, the next day, I bought shin guards and have worn them ever since.

Agree on the shin guards. That's on my list to purchase. I took a shot to the shin from an awkward bounce over the winter, black, blue and swelling for two weeks and she's only 12. Wouldn't trade the ability to catch for her though. Worth it.

Last tourney my DD played in I saw a coach/dad warm up one of the pitchers sitting sideways on a bucket. I can only surmise what he was trying to protect by doing that :p

It's time for me to purchase leg guards, but I came to the realization that all I need is the left leg. All our pitchers are right-handed. Not a scratch or bruise on my right leg. Anyone else observe the same thing? How funny would it look if I warmed up a pitcher with just one leg guard?

I love catching my DD, she is 11u and throws around 50. I don't wear any gear but I also don't sit on a bucket. I bend over to get my mitt where I want her to hit it. She mainly throws FB, change, and we are working on screw, curve, and drop. FB and change are pretty accurate, all the others? well you never know. I get out of the way of most of them. I also warm up our #1 during tourneys when she goes in mid-game. She throws about 55-56 and I am not real fond of catching her as that seems like a huge difference for some reason.

I have seen a guy with one pad but it was because the guy had a bum knee or something and had surgeries to repair. My daughter is a righty and almost always hits my left when I miss, or she misses.
