Outside of pitching lesson how much time or pitching reps does your A level 14U and up pitcher/s put in? Or is the extra time spent on strength, agility or/and conditioning training

Everyday? My DD will practice for 40 minutes most days when she is does not have team practice or games. Usually 3 or 4 days a week, but I thought her PC suggested one day off a week.

Seems excessive to me too but DD is not going to pitch in college.

(Few years ago Arizona lost all the pitchers for one reason or another and were asking if any of their field players if they ever pitched before in their life. You pitched in 8U great, get in there. Never say never I guess. :))

I think pitching everyday is excessive, sure I am wrong.

His DD is a lot better then mine though, maybe because she pitched everyday from at least 14 on.

The "throw every day" mantra is an attitude and an expectation. It means that you and your DD have a conversation *every day* about throwing.

Some days you and her say, "Let's get this done as fast as possible because we have other things to do..." Some days she can't throw...there is work, school, band, social events, church, illness, family events, etc. But you and she are always aware that she should throw if there is any way possible.

My DD threw 4 to 5 days a week, about 40 weeks a year. Some practices would be longer than others. Many times during the winter (we lived in Chicagoland) the practice would be one hour long simply because we rented a tube at the local practice facility. When we were outside, she would practice about 90 minutes.

I have two DD pitchers. I try to get them 4-5 days of pitching total over the course of a week. It just depends on what they're doing that week with their team as well as other normal kid things. This is a typical schedule for the week:

Saturday: If practicing, pitch at practice. If playing, pitch in the game(s).
Sunday: Usually playing, so pitch in the games.
Monday: Day off, especially if they pitched Saturday and Sunday.
Tuesday: Pitch, heavy workout.
Wednesday: Pitching lesson with instructor (they alternate weeks).
Thursday: Day off for the one that went with the instructor on Wednesday, regular pitching workout for the one that didn't.
Friday: Light pitching, enough to break the rust off, but nothing overly strenuous, especially if they have a tournament the next day.

A lot of it is predicated on what they're doing that week. Right now it gets dark early, so neither team is practicing much during the week, so I make sure to get them to pitch. Once they return to practicing during the week, I rely on their coaches to get them pitching time during practice and I'll catch for the other one.

With the winter break coming up, I usually leave them alone for a week or two and let them come to me and tell me they want to pitch. I've been doing this with DD1 (17 yoa) for 7 years now and I've found that it helps her refresh and refocus when she's had some time to do other stuff.

This is almost exactly what my DD did with the exception the organization she played for had their own warehouse they practiced in. The minimum would be an hour.

When my DD was younger it was a struggle at times to get her out there and working. When she hit 15 the light bulb went off. She understood what it took to be successful in the circle. Pratice was usually not an issue. It got to the point her non-softball friends understood and didn't try guilt her into things.

A pitcher needs to go out for more than 45 minutes practicing. I've seen so many kids run out of gas if they have to pitch more than 5 innings because they don't have the endurance. They cruise for the first 4 innings and then the wheels fall off the bus starting in the 5th. What I tell the parents of my students is to gradually lengthen the practices by 5-10 minutes a week till their DD can throw for 90 minutes and still be as strong at the end as she was at the start.

3-4 days per week seems to work pretty well for DD and a lot of kids that I know and watch up t0 14u. The only kid that I know whose mother claimed she pitched every day isn't pitching any more. Maybe at 16U and above if you're goal is to pitch in college, more is necessary.
