My biggest problem today is staying awake a work after watching until after 1 am.

Got my excuse ready, "Boss I wasn't sleeping just checking my eyelids for holes!"

So whether or not to start the 10th inning with a runner at 2nd needs to be decided at the pre-game meeting? Rule 16.5

Glad they didn't go with international tie-breaker. This game was as good as any baseball game I have ever watched.

Anyone notice Paige Lowary recorded a 75 MPH pitch, according to the announcer the fastest ever recorded at College World Series, according to them equal to a 105 MPH baseball.

Thanks to OP for posting this thread - I thought the game started tomorrow, so when I saw the thread, loaded up WatchESPN, and then realized "hey dummy - why not just turn on the tv in the basement and watch it on a 60" instead of a 6"?". I caught it in the 10th.

Peppers - not sure if you caught it during the broadcast - they showed a "form letter" the Florida AD posted on twitter (or is it tweeted out? tweeted?) - it was basically a Dr.'s note for work the next day.

Umpires
  • Kind of glad they don't have the "K-zone" box, but holy cow - I guess in SB there's no such thing as a low strike? No wonder there's been threads started about the lack of drop balls.
  • The 1st base umpire was impressive - couple of really close plays in extra-innings, and it looked like he nailed the call on each one.
  • I would not be surprised the HPU has some kind of wrist fracture. 70mph, right on the wrist (and the cup - I cringed when I saw it live!). His hand looked swollen before they even resumed play. Surprised he didn't get any icing spray on it (I think it's just lidocaine or something similar that I've seen used?)
  • As mentioned earlier - 400+ pitches = 400+ squats. He used a really wide stance - don't know if that relieves some of the fatigue from an otherwise lower setup. But again - I would have expected a lower strike zone if the HPU made that much effort to get lower on each pitch. Just my un-educated opinion on that one.

Great game - never could (or likely would) have reached the prolonged level of intensity using the tie-breaker rules.

Lots of good looking pitches not called as strikes. At several points, I thought the plate umpire's strike zone was the size of a donut hole.

For once, there wasn't a blown call in the field. I've seen clear foul balls called fair at least twice, runners going WAY out of the basepath to avoid a tag and called safe, and a phantom obstruction call. I know the college rules are a bit more permissive, but I've seen other instances where obstruction could (and probably should) have been called and wasn't.

Last night was a great game. The mental strength of the players on both sides is phenomenal.

It was her first pitch when she came back into the game and it looked like 75 on the video.

Was watching it on a 90 minute DVR delay and only had the DVR go an extra 30 minutes. Turn on TV and its the first batter of the 16th!

I set mine for 2 hours extra and missed a batter because I rewound a few plays. The batter I missed was when OU had the bases loaded with 2 outs (the first time).

Fun game.
