I have a question about teams entry fees paid by each player. I am not saying one way or another is better but rather trying to find out what is normally expected.
Lets say the entry fee is $150 and $30 pay at the plate. I am assuming that a team figures out the cost of the entry plus the total amount of ump fees if they make it to the last game. They then divide the total number of players and set a fee per player to be paid. (I understand that some teams (top ranked A and B teams may have a set fee that is paid every game or month and I am not referring to this kind of set up.)
Let's say you play two and are out or it is a two day that is completely rained out on the second day. What is usually expected to be done with the extra money left over? For example, 12 girls each pay $35 ($420 total) and at the end of the day only $340 was spent.
Does the coach keep that to put toward equipment for the team? Does it go in his/her pocket to help cover his expenses? is it saved to be put toward the next tournament?

I've never heard of the pay at the plate during Tournaments. Typically what we see is a Tournament Fee (which includes umpires). If doing friendlies, then both teams split umpire costs and possibly field cost.

What I do is figure out Tournament cost, registration cost, umpire fees for friendlies, practice field cost, equipment costs, and a little extra on top for unexpected expenses. Any $ left over typically is used for the next year or you can give back to the parents.

The coaches usually keep that money and pay for things like:

Registration (ASA, USFA, USSSA, FASA, PGF) fees
Team Insurance
Equipment
Score books
Practice fields
Tournament Fees
Umpires
Ice
Water

I doubt your coach that probably isn't charging you a coaching fee isn't pocketing the money. I'm sure he's spending wisely.

We just dropped $1000 for the Fall season so I wouldn't be worried about where your extra $12 went. I wish we only had to pay $35 a tournament that would be fantastic:cool:

I am not worrying about it at all. I am just trying to get an understanding of how all that works. As for right now I am preferring to be behind the fence learning all that I can in the travel ball world. I am very comfortable coaching rec but my 9yo just started playing travel ball this summer and I am just trying to educate myself on the process. Like all good fanatics, I want to make sure I am knowledgeable on EVERY aspect of the game. :)
Besides, Im the guy who keeps telling the coaches to quit asking for their $10 back when the ump fee is $30 and they hand them 2 $20s. I tell them to tell the ump to keep the change then wink at them. ;) (just kidding of coarse)

it just means that each team pays $35 to the umpires at the start of the game. so if there are two umps they split 70$ per game

You pay the tournament fee ($200), and then you pay $35 directly to the umps for each game you play )Pay at the plate.

Sounds like lazy associations running tournaments to me. If you're going to host a tournament you handle all payments to umpires and anyone else involved that requires payment. If you can't handle that then don't host a tournament.
