10u tb fly ball to right center. Cf runs about 60ft to the ball. Over runs by a step and she misses the ball. It never touches the glove. Is this an error or base hit. Next scenario. Batter hits a weak fly ball towards 3rd baseman ball gets about 10ft high and hits the ground in front of charging 3rd baseman. Fielder tries to field on short hop. She doesn't field the ball cleanly doesn't attempt throw batter is safe at 1st. Error or basehit.

As soon as you said "overrruns" it's an error in my book.

For the second case if the ball were fielded correctly and the runner would have been clearly out then "Error" here too.

Now, had she fielded the ball cleanly but not made the attempt, it would have been scored a hit.

I say base hit in first scenario. Fielder did not touch the ball. However....I would most likely put down E8 in the book.

Next scenario. Fly ball to cf. Cf backs off and let's it hit the ground. Error or hit. Next scenario hard linedrive to SS hits off glove goes to OF.

Case : hard linedrive to SS hits off glove goes to OF => most likely a "hit" if the girl extended the best she could to it and the ball did not get in the pocket

Case : Groundball to pitcher. Pitcher chases runner back to 3rd. Batter safe at 1st. => leaning towards FC

I would say, in order, hit, error, FC.

ETA: in the case of the shortstop, if she was already going ba!!s to the wall to catch it, and it tipped, then I would say hit. If it looked like she should have caught it, error.

MLB scoring rules leave you to define ''ordinary effort.'' .. The fact that the fly ball didn't touch the glove does not exonerate her. The scorer has to decide what ''ordinary effort'' would've accomplished on that play. That's hard to define.

I probably would've given a hit on the fly ball because it's 10U and she had to run 60 feet to get there. In fact, my rule (which is probably just as unofficial yet helpful as 'it didn't touch her glove') would be 'was she well-positioned to catch the ball?' If you are in position to catch it, then it's an error if you don't, IMO.

That definition lets bad fielders off the hook for all sorts of misadventures, but it also provides an objectivity for the scorekeeper. Otherwise, you open up a can of worms. What's ordinary effort in pursuing the ball is one thing for Jessica but another for Kelly. It's easier for me to define ordinary effort when it is restricted to 'Were you there? Did you catch it?'
