The Mom is thinking long term...full rides only go to pitchers/catchers.

Not true Circle. Because of the recent threads stating that parents are always saying that their DD got a full ride I haven't mentioned my DD's offer. It is to a mid-level D1 and it is a full ride, well 96%, we have some fees to pay. Tuition, room, board and books. She will not qualify for academic money so she got an athletic out of state waver. She plays cf/2nd and is a slapper who can also hit for power. There is money out there for position players.

And at what point do you let the player handle it? This is a team of older players. Oh you must be one of "those" parents, nevermind then ;)

My thing is; sure if the player isn't happy by all means find somewhere where you will be happy, but this player says she is happy with the situation. It doesn't matter to me either way, just seems odd that Mom hasn't talked to her own kid about it or what she wants to do.

I did except no matter how hard I tried she couldn't field a groundball, so I moved her to SS but that didn't help either, so then I finally had the idea to move her to Pitcher!!!!! Yup that's the ticket.... hahaha

I could be wrong in that statement, I got it from here. Wasn't deputed when originally stated. I'll recant to: your best opportunity to get a full ride is to be a pitcher or catcher, who is eligible for academic scholarships and grants.

I can just see this mom as trying to do the best for her DD. If her daughter can't beat out the other catcher, she better play all she can, cause she will always be beating out someone, or someone will be trying to beat her out from here on. She has probably been out politic-ed plenty of times to get this far. Catcher and 3rd. you know she has to be pretty good. If HC doesn't have a DD in the mix...my next question is does #1 take lessons from him, or his buddy? Team has a problem, should have been developing catchers. You can't recruit catchers to be 2nd. My DD is a pitcher/catcher/SS...Against everyone's advice I keep her catching...locks her into a spot pitching, I was real easy, bought the catching gear second hand, and don't even practice at it...(just 10U though) and coach says we lose nothing when the (#1) is out lol. DD loves to trade places with #1 and watch her try to play SS.

Check must have cleared, Coaches back up off their hands and knees posture, and back to the parents "stay out of it" mode :{)) If it was her game, them you would let her call the pitches, and set the line up & batting order.

How can you stay out of it with your DD ? Kids could be Happy just setting around watching TV, or playing video games. Now mine is getting happy just setting out in the garage texting.

The Mom is thinking long term...full rides only go to pitchers/catchers. If she can't beat the #1 catcher out, then she needs to play more @ catcher. And to the coaches whos DD does make it to colleges, you'll be lucky if you make #3 on the grounds crew.

What does that last sentence mean?

It was meant to place the evaluation shoe on the other foot. Parents are evaluated, or de-valuated according to a relative standard of judgement by people who project to know the college athletic requirements. They make choices, one over another. If the Parent wants a second opinion, they are basically told to shut up ( just on here, I doubt that to much of that really happens face to face) or considered a problem. All I was saying is that Most TB coaches aren't looking into their total potential with a view of the realities of who will be the best in the long run. And that they would find it hard to find employment in a coaching position if they followed their DD to the college she goes to.

I say this because I watched as our local college got a girl. I seen the Pics at the signing, I read her accomplishments in HS and TB, which stated that her Dad was her TB coach, and gave their impressive record. But when I went to the games, she wasn't playing where she was recruited for, an Dad was out raking the field, not AC. I'm letting the OP know that this lady don't like it. You tell her daughter is second best, she's bucking. I'm betting she misunderstood what she was committing too. What I would do is put them head to head in a tryout. Time them running around the bases, stand them at home and see who can throw the ball the furthest ect...No one can buck when they see for themselves that they just got beat out. The problem is you don't have a #3 pitcher, and this lady ain't playing second fiddle to your tune.

I have the feeling that you have had a bad experience with a coach in the recent past.

Anyone who is coaching his/her dd with the idea that when she goes to college he/she will be on the coaching staff is an idiot. I don't know a single person who thinks that is a possibility. As for raking the field, good for him I love seeing parents who are willing to do the grunt work for the program. Its nicer to play ball on a raked field its good to see parents who will do what it takes to help the team.

As for a a head to head tryout, when how far you throw the ball is important to catching, I am sure it will become a standard metric in tryouts. But until that time I think the traditional pop time will work.
