the softball teams in my area do not charge...however, it seems every volleyball team does(and charge around $500 if you make the team*puke*).

Makes sense. Cuts down on the random "see if I make it but I don't care either way" tryouts by girls who aren't serious. I see it no different from colleges and the application fee. Most (if not all) colleges and universities have a nominal fee to apply for admission. Usually they offer a waiver if you attend an orientation, have previous contact with a recruiting advisor, etc. It cuts down on kids who have no interest in attending but want to apply anyway (often to get parents off their backs).

This sport is so expensive that another $25.00 isn't that much. I guess I would make certain DD is interested in playing for them and is her position available?

Some organizations up in the Chicago area charge a fee and that's to pay 'professional' raters. These program typically have paid coaches as well.
