Chris's HE thread got me to thinking that Lil DD's first year of HS ball is about to start... Hoping there is no HE, bug squishing and all that jazz...

Just got off the phone with my daughters new coach who was a pitcher. She played D1 at a big time school. She was never taught to Brush but to stay open all the time!! Arggg going to take video of her pitching I don’t buy it. Showed her this site hope she gets curious and tries to learn. She is great other then that!

If she pitched recently there is no doubt video of her pitching. She might really be surprised...most are if they are honest and will listen that they don't actually pitch the way they were taught...their body learned the right way because it is what was natural and efficient and effective despite what they were taught. Just have to find a diplomatic way to approach the subject without having them shut down which is easier said than done because hey who are you to tell them anything they played big time softball and you didn't.

Last line is key. "You played big time softball. I want my daughter to pitch like you. Can you please teach her to do that?"

There you're just challenging pedagogy, which she almost certainly just picked up along the way and didn't really spend time studying, and not her actual ability or knowledge of the sport itself.

I'm not really sure if DD is HE or IR. From what I can understand about the two, she started at HE while she learned the basic mechanics. Now that she's older and become more refined my guess is she's gravitated towards what people here call IR.

Is there more to it than that? Is IR more of a natural progression or is there a fundamental difference in styles? I'd never heard of IR until I got here and saw the almost cult following it has. It sure makes for some good reading :)

I found where I had posted four years ago on this topic. Sadly I still don’t know if DD is HE or IR. I see some of the IR stuff discussed on here, but have to admit I don’t understand all of it. Is this IR, HE or a combo?

She definitely uses Whip/IR.

Here's a rough breakdown describing HE/Whip:

"Hello Elbow" might look like these:
Softball Pitching: How To Pitch a Softball | Softball Drills & Tips Video Library | PlaySportsTV
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gc99t_g9RUs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83tC79baMU0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDUC-B-eGA

Hello Elbow can be characterized by these points:
-Ball facing 2nd base at 12 o'clock
-Wrist cocked back--ready to snap
-Arm speed is critical
-Ball is pushed down to release
-Wrist snaps violently at the "release point."
-Hand/fingers peel up the ball
-Arm forcefully pulls up hard and finishes with the fingers touching the shoulder and elbow pointing at the target
-Hips snap through and face squarely to target after release
-Warm up starts standing sideways and flick the ball with wrist only

Arm whip (IR) looks like these:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6z39S19x8o
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQz7CKn0SS4

Whip/IR might be characterized by:
-The ball is pulled around the circle
-Lower arm is loose and relaxed, resulting in a lagged lower arm and ball
-Palm is facing upwards from 9-8 o'clock
-Upper arm pauses at the ribs allowing the lower arm/ball to accelerate
-Upper arm internally rotates, elbow stays flexed
-Lower arm wraps/rolls/brushes around the hip--triggering release
-Lower arm/wrist/hand rotates from a palm up/supinated position to a palm downish/pronated position
-Overall follow through is relaxed and natural
-Warm up: throw the ball underhand naturally with good posture and brush

I started writing a small script for a HE\IR video today...I'm gonna try a dry run video session Friday night after my last lesson :)

Keep an eye on your email...I'll be looking for some critique...

Coach James, Shaker or anyone else in seeing\giving input in the video, please PM me your email address...CP
